We try not to convict people of criminal offenses in proceedings in which they are not allowed to participate.

The Fifth and Sixth Amendments suggest that an accused criminal has a right to know what’s going on in his or her trial and to defend himself.

in his defense, meaning he gets to know what’s going on in terms of procedural decisions. He has the right even to fire his lawyers and defend himself at any time, which won’t happen here, but he’s entitled to the same level of involvement.
