I thought that was just lawyers and the judge. He puts on headphones to listen it seems? Not a lawyer but anybody know why?

We try not to convict people of criminal offenses in proceedings in which they are not allowed to participate.
The Fifth and Sixth Amendments suggest that an accused criminal has a right to know whats going on in his or her trial and to defend himself.

in his defense, meaning he gets to know whats going on in terms of procedural decisions. He has the right even to fire his lawyers and defend himself at any time, which wont happen here, but hes entitled to the same level of involvement.
