Someone applied for unemployment benefits in my dead husband's name. Ohio sent a letter with his password online to my address, which is how I caught it.
The idiot opened an account for direct deposit with my husband's name and their name and her address. Cops picked her up this morning.
I had to push pretty hard to get it this far. I was told with the volume of claims and added benefit there is a lot of this. It is organized and they recruit people to front.
Stay vigilant folks ... 1 in 100000 bad apples can still spoil the barrel.

(16,361 posts)They have her name, ssn, AND her work ID number.
She works for a major corporation, their fraud unit is looking into it, we'll never know imo, because it was their data breech.
We have our credit locked at all three companies, everyone should do this.

(36,137 posts)Not being nosey, just curious, since when I had to do that at the police station once, I found out what the penalties for the offenders might be.
Will you have to appear in court?

(6,695 posts)Someone stole an identity to defraud the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
All I did was report a crime.... legally speaking.

(43,304 posts)I've had 3 out of nowhere phishing probes trying to contact me over the past year - for health insurance, trying to buy something from me, and a religious wacko who contacted me my phone. One was local, one from Florida, one from Michigan. Why would someone from Michigan try to sell me health insurance, with a folksy/Christian values letter printed with a likely fake Union label? People from Florida don't need to solicit me via letter - there are enough of them locally. I attributed these to the election (trying to get my text number), or deplorable recruiting, or locals trying to fleece me. So maybe it was just plain old ID theft phishing. We must all be vigilant. I have tightened up security. I can't wait until banks reopen (we're still at drive throughs), so I can pinpoint someone on the subject of debit cards.

(22,166 posts)your dead husband's name in the process...maybe you can also sue for your stress too (the crooks)...probably won't be worth it if they are stealing they probably don't have anything but who knows? At least the state can nail them for falsely trying to claim benefits that they don't deserve, because of your persistence...makes you wonder how many other people they've tried swindling money out of?

(11,571 posts)I hate it when people cheat a system that's been established to help people in need. It makes existing programs harder to maintain, and new programs harder to start. All because of someone's larceny and greed.

(11,662 posts)Not just toss it in the recycle bin. My brother in law does that. Fortunately, they were looking for some scrap paper for some purpose and discovered an envelope with a stimulus fund prepaid debit card. Could have been a $600 mistake. My wife was an IBEW electrician who passed away Four years ago. Ive gotten at least two class action lawsuit settlement checks made out to her. Apparently the union sued some entities for something. I had no idea.

Maybe I should open and read first, before throwing it out.

(6,695 posts)My husband gave money to a veterans charity (that doesn't give much to veterans unfortunately) and now several charities keep sending (him) wild patterned (kid sized) socks with the request for a donation.
