Outside of the common things we all use such as public streets, police departments, libraries, etc etc, I do not receive any other type of check from the Government outside of my yearly income taxes (and that's only if the Government doesn't screw around with that home owners deduction).
I'm lucky, I have a good job, good health and no dire needs that require me to receive assistances from the government. At least for now I can say that.
So I guess that makes me part of the 53% and guess what...
I don't care what Mitt thinks or says I'm still not going to vote for him either! Yes I've been blessed by having a job but I also know that could change one day and I want to know that there is some sort of safety net out there that can protect me until I get back on my feet.
And the people who do receive government checks - I haven't met one that just sits around on their ass all day eating bon-bons and watching soaps on TV. Whether its my retired parents, a friend who returned from military duty and even a relative trying to find a job - those people work just as hard as I do. Many have kids to raise, a home to maintain or just working hard to find themselves a job. It's not easy work and I have no judgment against people who are receiving government checks.
So I guess what I have to say is this - I am part of the 53% and I not only support Barack Obama & Joe Biden and that I have a great deal of respect for the 47% because I don't see alot of difference between them and myself. We're all in this together and there's a longtime motto that has been used by this country that I truly believe 'United we Stand, Divided we Fall' If one half the the country totally ignores the other half then we are not going to make it.

(111,255 posts)since I'm a capitalist parasite these days living off the income from a portfolio. He'd find that income laughably low and wonder why I'm not dipping into the principal, but that's his problem, not mine.
I am definitely voting for Obama, and it's not just because his opponent can't keep a straight story from one day to the next, it's because Republicans have always cost me too much money in the form of depressed wages, destroyed infrastructure, and now poor stock performance.
I can't afford any more of them.

(2,953 posts)There are many liberals in the upper tax brackets, who understand that there is a difference between being a citizen and just pushing to minimize one's own taxes. The right-wing works hard to politically divide us by income and wealth, to divide the "makers" from the "takers," the 53% from the 47%, etc.
We should fight that.
