Some openly fret that broader access to voting will harm the party's chances.

In the aftermath of the GOP's assault on the integrity of the 2020 presidential election and amid a torrent of Republican measures aimed at restricting voting rights in the name of security, Democrats are pushing for a far-reaching solution to counter attempts at narrowing access to the ballot box.
H.R. 1, known as the For the People Act, seeks to abolish hurdles to voting, reform the role of money in politics and tighten federal ethics rules. Among the key tenets of the bill to overhaul the nation's election system: allowing for no-excuse mail voting, at least 15 days of early voting, automatic voter registration and restoring voting rights to felons who have completed their prison sentences.
Democrats' comprehensive bill passed the House -- for the second time -- nearly along party lines earlier this month and was introduced in the Senate this week. But it faces steep opposition from the GOP over its potential implications for future elections, including the 2022 midterms, with some Republicans openly fretting that broader access to voting will harm the party's chances.
For Republicans, H.R. 1 represents a Democratic "power grab" that could tilt elections in their favor for years to come, as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., put it. One Arizona state lawmaker called it "anti-Republican."

(10,024 posts)Every Republican policy beginning with Reagan has failed. Reagan started the immense transfer of the nations wealth to the 1% and plunged more Americans income poverty or near poverty. George H. W. Bush was correct when he called such policies voodoo economics.
Republican embraced the trickke down theory, which has been an utter bust. Kansas nearly went bankrupt following that theory, and even Republicans there revolted. And every time Republicans controlled the White House and Congress, they passed tax cuts for the wealthy that eventually led to recession and drove up the national debt.
Republicans have no economic policies that are workable. They turned to social issues to win elections, so now their platform is filled with positions that many people, especially young people, would reject. Imagine a truthful Republican platform that read as follows:
1. We believe the white race is superior to all other races and will pass laws to prevent other races accessing the rights and privileges of the white race. As possible, we will remove citizenship rights and remove people of these substandard races from country.
2. We believe that the evangelical Christian religion is the only true religion and that all non-adherents of this religion will be forced to convert or suffer the consequences of refusal, such as denial of all civil rights and possible life imprisonment or banishment from the country.
3. It is our policy that women and LGBTQ are subject to the will of their male relatives and have no rights outside those allowed them by such male relatives. Women shall obey their masters and shall not refuse sexual relations nor avoid pregnancy nor have access to any form of birth control. According to our Bible, LGBTQ are to be put to death.
4. Our policy is to control the populace through limiting knowledge and information. Forms of communication shall be limited to propaganda, conspiracy theories, lies about the condition of the country and the government, and a suspension of free speech by those who disagree. Self-appointed armed militia will monitor behavior and use violence as necessary to enforce correct thought and behavior.
5. All elections shall be closely monitored to prevent those without secure voting privileges gained through support of the Partys platform from exercising the vote. Registration to vote shall be a rigorous process carried out in person to determine a persons viewpoint and thus a right to vote. Persons who profess democratic values will be rejected.
What fun! I could go on, but this is the gist of Republican beliefs today.

(19,962 posts)Democrats recognise this, evidenced by their upping the priority after Jan 6. If you recall, before Christmas it was
1. Covid Relief Bill
2. Infrastructure Bill
3. Anything else
After Jan 6 it became
1. Covid Relief Bill
2. HR1/VRA
3. Infrastructure
There's enough money going to be floating around, to wait a little longer on the Infrastructure Bill. The Democratic Party is only one Pat Leahy away from losing control of the Senate.....there is simply no time to lose.
Thankfully Jim Clyburn is REALLY insistent that they pass HR1/VRA, so i suspect there'll be no messing around.

(11,572 posts)They have a deep fear of making it easy for eligible Americans to vote and unless they are stopped, will continue to cheat in order to win elections. They are a minority party because they have nothing to offer outside of tax cuts for the rich and a culture war.

(145,374 posts)The GOP is the party of voter suppression. Former CH Rehnquist got his start in GOP politics as a meber of a GOP goon squad in Arizona that challenged non white voters for daring to vote. https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Rehnquist-on-Voting-Fairness-Chief-Justice-2690688.php
But several witnesses -- including San Francisco lawyer James Brosnahan -- told a different story.
Brosnahan testified at the 1986 hearings that in 1962, when he was an assistant U.S. attorney in Phoenix, he received complaints that GOP operatives were stalling voters at a heavily Democratic precinct by accusing minorities of being unable to read. Some states had long used literacy tests to prevent minorities from voting, but federal law banned the practice in 1964.
The asshole who formed ALEC and founded the Heritage Foundation was clear on this
The GOP has to cheat to win elections

(3,707 posts)It is real tell and should be widely told on billboards and bumpers, "the right to vote is anti-republican", in their own words.
Dear America, the GOP does not believe their ideas, principles and practices are what you want. The GOP knows that you find their vision to be vacuous and their plans to be putrid, therefore you can not be allowed to have a say about your future in your country.
It seems that their ideas can not be trusted to the free-hand of the marketplace; so say the ever-wrong right.

They'd rather allow a vote for M4A, GND and Firearms Background checks before HR1.
Oh and my prediction is... not a chance HR1 becomes law.
And if it was to become law... it wouldn't make it past Barf, HandMaiden, GoodHair, Sleepy, Scalito and JR.
