Holland America cancels Alaska cruises through June

Cruise operator Holland America Line said Tuesday it is extending its pause of Seattle cruise operations through June 30, canceling all roundtrip sailings between Seattle and Alaska for the key summer month.

The move affects six scheduled cruises in June with stops in Victoria, British Columbia, the company said in a news release.

The reason: Canadian waters remain closed to U.S. cruise ships under an interim no-sail order designed to control the spread of Covid-19 north of the border.

The Canadian government banned cruise ships with more than 100 people from Canadian waters in May 2020, and extended the ban again in February for another year. Under U.S. law, foreign-flagged passenger ships, including most operated by the major cruise lines, must make an interim stop in another country when sailing between domestic ports. The upshot is that cruises headed to Alaska can't just bypass Canada.
