(34,403 posts)The GQP keeps whining about "cancel culture" when they appear to be the biggest offenders. What a shocker.

I believe it was the next week when a petulant Joe Pesci ripped up a picture of O'Connor. And right after that, Madonna ripped up a picture of Joey Buttafuoco, which was kinda funny.

(9,580 posts)and I was horrified at the response. SNL is (was) a liberal comedy show and she got so much shit! Fuck the Pope. As a former Catholic, I feel perfectly justified in saying that given the churches' compliance and coverup of sexual abuse, particularly of children, over the years. It continues today.
Dixie Chicks got a raw deal, but c'mon, you can't compare a derogatory remark about Bush and Texas to the risk Sinead took. And the crimes of the pious Catholics.

(11,738 posts)The whole, "political correctness" issue was around women and minorities demanding to be treated with respect and dignity in the 80's and 90's, then the right got ahold of it, used a phrase that signified toeing a Communist Party line, and beat people up with it for asking that you think before you label people with stereotypes.
The word liberal was associated with the Enlightenment, an age of reason and growth. All politicians in the US considered themselves liberal, until the right got ahold of it and started smearing the term to mean, "weak on crime, weak on national defense, tax and spend" and all other manner of bullshit.
The concept of people suffering for their political or social beliefs has always been a part of human society. Predominantly it was minority views that were "cancelled". Women fighting for equality, Black people fighting for full citizenship. Workers fighting for equitable distribution of the fruits of labor. Communists and socialists looking to challenge Capitalism. The Blacklists in Hollywood were a form of "cancel culture". There is a discussion to be had about cancelling and "twitter mobs" and other aspects that might be identified as "cancel culture", but as I have said before, conservatives aren't seeking good faith discussion on the limits of speech and how society reacts to speech. They are ALWAYS looking to exploit concepts to weaponize them and advance their agenda.
