Got my first one Monday and had an extremely sore arm along with some fatigue. I've read that it indicates you're already been exposed to the virus, so the first shot acts like a second shot. If you had this reaction, was the second shot milder, or just as strong?

(2,025 posts)Not even as sore as it is after my annual flu shot. My second Moderna jab is scheduled for eight days from today. According to all the reports I've been hearing, I can expect my arm to be a little sorer, nothing worse.

(21,849 posts)I was useless the day following the shot. My arm hurt a lot and I was fatigued. However, by the second day, my arm felt better and I was more alert.
Today is the third day and I seem to be okay.
I know I was exposed to COVID last year but never developed symptoms and never had a test. My exposure was in March 2020 when the outbreak occurred here in NYC.

(440 posts)I also had a strong reaction to the first shot. I had the worst headache, & was lethargic. I had my second vaccine and sore arm, thats it. I also heard the same thing about that theory,Im not sure what to think. Im just happy Im fully vaccinated

(8,445 posts)I got my second shot of the Pfizer vaccine on Monday morning. I woke up around 2:30 a.m. feeling not very good. It got progressively worse over the next 10 hours. I finally crawled out of bed a little after noon, but still didn't feel good. I had a low grade fever (99.5), and had a mild headache and body aches. The worst part was the fatigue, yet I couldn't really rest. I had no appetite too, but I didn't mind that too much, except that I couldn't even drink coffee.
This morning I'm not at 100 percent, but I'm feeling pretty good. I'm so happy to have completed the vaccine process, though I wouldn't be surprised if we're told we need another at some point in the future.
I plan on collecting some long overdue hugs very soon.

(440 posts)how the reactions of this vaccine are different. Im older, and so that may have something to do with the effect it had on me.
I am so looking forward to hugging my out of state grandchildren at some point😊

(8,445 posts)I've got six.
My son and his wife have a two year old, and I was told about a month ago that they'll likely be moving to another part of the country soon because the phase of the project my son is working on is almost complete. They moved here from the east coast about four years ago, and I knew it wasn't going to be for forever, but I just feel so ripped off because I missed an entire year of granddaughter time because of the pandemic. They actually live about 100 miles from me.
I'm definitely going up for a visit as soon as these two weeks are up. I've seen them various times for relatively safe visits, but it's going to be so nice to actually get to hold that sweet girl again.
We've all got a lot of catching up to do.

(1,488 posts)Arm was sore through the next day, especially around injection site.
I definitely felt fatigued that evening and next day but managed fine with a couple doses of caffeine.
Keeping my fingers crossed for the reaction to the 2nd shot...

(9,983 posts)had a very sore arm and fatigue, slightly sore throat reaction to first shot, none to the second. I had sore arm and nothing else to first, chills, headache and body aches to second. One of my friends got pretty sick after her first and says she is not getting the second. I'll tell her this.

(8,445 posts)Honestly, for a little while yesterday I thought to myself that if I'd known I was going to feel that crappy I probably would have backed out. But it's in the rearview mirror now, and I'm very happy that I got it. I'm sure the effects that I felt from my second dose of Pfizer didn't come close to what I'd have felt if I had actually gotten COVID. Another convincing factor is the possible lifelong implications of getting the virus, like lung injury, possible amputations, etc. I wasn't willing to roll the dice on that.
is being a total idiot about it and says she's not getting a second shot, period. You would think she'd know better. She's a nurse, FFS. But she's a hard-headed redhead and you can't talk sense into her.

(8,445 posts)One of my daughters-in-law said she's not getting it. I'm hoping she'll change her mind, but there's nothing I can do about it.

(14,971 posts)Having a sore arm is experienced by almost everybody just like with a tetanus shot. People with strong reactions have fevers , fatigue and nausea.

(3,814 posts)like can't lift your arm sore for about 48 hours. Fine now but it was a bit rough at the time.

(1,493 posts)But I dont think thats considered to be an overly strong reaction. I got my second Moderna yesterday in the am. By mid to late afternoon my arm was sore and I was feeling a bit achy.
24 hrs post vaccine, I have a low grade fever (close to 99F but I run cold), mild headache and some slight chills and muscle aches. I am assuming this is the worst it will be for me, but we shall see!
Yeah, I just couldn't keep warm for the entire day yesterday (got my second Pfizer shot on Monday morning).

(3,816 posts)on Monday when I received the 1st shot. Felt better by Tue. morning but my arm is still sore.

(5,229 posts)Mild flu like symptoms that disappeared overnight. Second shot, same but with stronger flu symptoms. Disappeared after 24 hours or so. Well worth it!

(10,303 posts)Similar reaction for the 2nd (an excellent nights sleep).
I'll find out next week assuming I get Moderna (whatever Walgreens has in stock I guess).

(7,314 posts)... really tired that night, and elevated blood sugar for a few days. That's it.

(34,172 posts)My arm is more sore than I expected given my standard reaction to flu shots. Low grade, but I notice it when I raise my arm or rolled over on it at night.
Had a feeling of a sinus infection by my right eye and cheekbone. It's been 10 years since I've had one, but it is a bad pine pollen season in SE Georgia so it could be that.
Yep, I'm tired. I woke up at 8 am and laid in bed until noon.
I wouldn't call this a strong reaction, but it is noticeable.

(29 posts)After the 1st dose, I had a sore arm for several fays, but after the 2nd was when I experienced chills and high (101.9) fever. The effects started 12 hrs after I was inoculated, lasted for 24 hrs, and then I was fine, but a bit fatigued, since I had not really eaten anything for 24 hrs. Those inconveniences are well worth the peace of mind I have now!

(8,445 posts)I figured that at least I could be confident that there was actually vaccine in that syringe because I felt the side effects.

(4,743 posts)Was fine all day, just a bit of growing soreness.
Saturday...dear lord. I couldn't lift my arm more than 90 degrees, had a 100.3 degree fever, chills, body aches, cold-clamminess, lethargy, the whole kit-n-caboodle. I'm not complaining at all, a couple of days of feeling shite is well worth it, but I am blocking out the two days after my second shot and planning on Becoming One With My Couch.
Have never tested positive, nor had any symptoms, but I also never had an antibody test so I couldn't say whether or not I was ever infected.

(8,445 posts)Sometimes when I read about someone on here who's disappointed that their significant other can't get the vaccine at the same time that they get it, I think to myself that it's probably a good thing. One can take care of the other in the case of side effects. I live alone now, except for the annoying cats, and it sure would have been nice to have somebody around yesterday to get me some water. Cats are selfish, though, and they just didn't care.

(11,738 posts)A bunch of my coworkers reported symptoms (flu like, fatigue, etc...) after the second dose. I had soreness at the injection site, but less than the first dose. No other symptoms.

(26,080 posts)It is interesting what you said, because my doctor is pretty positive I had it in January 2020.

(4,610 posts)At the time she was told it was OK as long as it was more than 14 days since she has tested positive.
She got *very* sick -- terrible headache and unbearable nausea.
She got her second shot a few days ago and had a similar reaction, only it came on quicker and didn't last as long. She also had anti-nausea pills prescribed by her doctor, which made things easier.
Bottom line, from experience, if you get really sick the first time, you'll probably get really sick the second time, but it won't be worse than the first and might be slightly more bearable.

(6,598 posts)until I retched, and aching all over. This went on for 2 weeks, until my Doctor insisted I get tested for covid. By then I was starting to feel better, so no surprise when it came back negative.
After the 2nd shot, my arm hurt terribly for days, slight fever and achy. All of it went away, and I'm now fine and...fully vaccinated!
helpisontheway
(5,008 posts)that some people that have a severe side effect (fever, headaches, joint aches, etc) have likely had Covid. And the ones that have a severe side effect to the first one generally dont have any issues with the second shot. My son only had nausea a few days with his first Moderna shot. He gets his second one tomorrow.

(28,866 posts)I got my first Moderna shot this morning. She put a
bandaid (shaped like a washer) on my arm first and
then made a little jab that I hardly felt.
She said if there were side effects to take Tylenol
(acetominophen) but not Ibuprofen.
Turns out I don't have side effects, and my arm isn't
sore at all.
What luck!
