There were 3,800 anti-Asian racist incidents, mostly against women, (reported) in past year

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/there-were-3-800-anti-asian-racist-incidents-mostly-against-n1261257

New data has revealed over the past year, the number of anti-Asian hate incidents — which can include shunning, slurs and physical attacks — is greater than previously reported. And a disproportionate number of attacks have been directed at women.

The research released by reporting forum Stop AAPI Hate on Tuesday revealed nearly 3,800 incidents were reported over the course of roughly a year during the pandemic. It’s a significantly higher number than last year's count of about 2,800 hate incidents nationwide over the span of five months. Women made up a far higher share of the reports, at 68 percent, compared to men, who made up 29 percent of respondents. The nonprofit does not report incidents to police.

Russell Jeung, professor of Asian American studies at San Francisco State University and the forum’s founder, told NBC Asian America that the coalescence of racism and sexism, including the stereotype that Asian women are meek and subservient, likely factors into this disparity.

“There is an intersectional dynamic going on that others may perceive both Asians and women and Asian women as easier targets,” he said.

Thank you for posting!

I think a lot of people are ignoring the gender component of this shooting as well. I do believe it can be motivated by rage along BOTH racial AND gender lines. It doesn't have to just be one OR the other.

I live in the Bay Area. My social group is about 90% Asian. My partner is Asian. I'm the only non-Asian guy living in my own house.

Anti-Asian discrimination has been going on for a long, long time. But, because they're the "model minority," no one cared, and it never seemed to count. There's this idea that they didn't need the help. They just weren't "oppressed" enough. When universities started discriminating against them, there were plenty on our side who were eager and happy to justify it. "They're so successful. Other people need the help more."

And this isn't only a white supremacy problem. If people start acting like it's only white people who have have a history of attacking Asians for years, I may very well lose it.

In fact, I probably shouldn't even talk about it on this board. Because there are a lot of truths about attacks on Asians that people will not want to hear.

Trump made things worse. But he didn't start this. Not by a long shot.

The whole topic pisses me off. Oh, now people care. Great. And people will be heading out to the streets when . . .?

Yeah, exactly.

The whole topic pisses me off to no end. I'm glad people are finally noticing because Trump started mouthing off, but it shouldn't have taken that.

And it is not solely white supremacy. See: LA riots, Oakland on any day at random, SF when it's feeling froggy, etc.

It needs to be addressed.

You're right; Trump didn't start this at all. But I stand by the assertion of this being a result of white supremacy. Racism among nonwhite people is a tool of white supremacy, and has been since the founding days of this nation.
