HR1 would thwart virtually every single GOP voter suppression tactic. This is why Mitch McConnell so terrified of it https://brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/congress-could-change-everything

America is facing an overwhelming legislative assault on voting rights.

As of February 19, more than 253 bills restricting voting access had been carried over, prefiled, or introduced in 43 states, and the number is rising. Already, two of these bills have passed, and many are moving aggressively through state legislatures. Fueled by the Big Lie of widespread voter fraud and often discriminatory in design, these bills have the potential to dramatically reduce voting access, especially for Black and brown voters.

This legislative campaign to suppress the vote can — and must — be stopped by Congress. The Brennan Center has analyzed each of the restrictive voting bills pending in the states and concludes that The For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) would thwart virtually every single one. The For the People Act, which passed the United States House of Representatives in early March, is a transformative bill that would expand voting rights and strengthen our democracy.

The landmark legislation would create a national baseline for voting access that every American can rely on, and it would foil state efforts to manipulate voting rules to exclude eligible voters or create discriminatory outcomes. As President Biden said on the anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the For the People Act is “urgently needed to protect the right to vote, the integrity of our elections, and to repair and strengthen our democracy.” Along with the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, it includes all of the critical reforms needed to prevent voter suppression. Amidst a withering attack on voting rights in nearly every state, the Senate must now get to work and pass this bill into law.

The table below outlines each of the major themes of the pending state voter suppression bills and explains how the For the People Act would address them.

are now all sending signals that they are ready to do something about the filibuster and this anti-voting rights deluge is the reason. The bill will pass because the filibuster will be waived on voting rights. Congress can set election laws and states must abide. Also, the John Lewis bill will allow oversight of state elections by the Dept. of Justice. Dems know, all of them, that their political future depends on these bills and they will pass. If any of the bs gets to the Supreme Court the federal laws will be upheld. States run the elections, the feds set the rules.

I am thinking that it has become clear to those who were hesitant on the last round that this is the only way forward and it could be the end of us on this one Bill. And they must deliver, as Sen. Schumer said, "...we have no choice ...failure is not an option."

Those Republican AGs will be running to the court to get it overturned. All the way up the judicial food chain.

We still have to do it, but it's not a done deal even after Joe signs it.

that congress can regulate federal elections. its not even ambiguous so it will be hard for even the supreme court conservatives to shoot it down.

The filibuster would probably have to be defanged to get it across. And there, we get back into Manchin territory, and perhaps also Sinema.

Make it a "real" filibuster once again instead of the "virtual" ones of late where all they have to do is announce their intent and everything comes to a screeching halt.

Anyone with a sincere abjection should have no problem with putting some skin in the game.

Sen. Merkley now proposes were part of it. He'd once proposed the simple change, which would have allowed a string of senators to pass the ball along so they all got screen time without anyone being put out. He now proposes that not fewer than "41 senators" would have to be present and hold the floor continuously. If their # fell below 41, the filibuster would end. It potentially gets even more hurtful in action, so we'll see.

I love imagining it, though. An end to the empty chamber for CSPAN2 viewers.

GQP politicians are no longer interested in serving The People as demonstrated by their unanimous opposition to the American Rescue Plan despite its bipartisan popularity among voters. They know they can no longer win a majority of voters in a democracy. Their answer to that reality is to corruptly manipulate the system in order to create a permanent government of their minority party that does not depend on--or care about--the will of The People.
