(2,769 posts)I will never understand the fascination with such expensive baubles. I took a look at the page for this thing expecting it would have some next level life saving functions or something. Nope, it's just a watch made out of expensive stuff.

(115,757 posts)Rich guy walks into jewelry store, sees the watch, says, "Jeez, that's an ugly watch. Do people ever actually buy those things?"
Jeweler: "Yes, but not many; it's $500,000."
Rich Guy: "I'll take it!"

(938 posts)From ablogtowatch.com explanation of why these cost so much - it's just because most people can't pay that:
Quoting:
The meat of my argument on why a luxury product like a Richard Mille timepiece is so expensive is because it is an effort to create exclusivity. What comes with the Richard Mille product is an unspoken promise that only other people like you can afford it. Thus, for Richard Mille, high prices act as an exclusionary tactic to prevent the wrong type of consumer from owning one of the products. There is no faster way to disillusion a dedicated luxury consumer than by allowing them to see their high-priced status item on the wrist of someone who cant afford as much as they do.
In a very real sense Richard Mille has protected the ability for its clients to say (explicitly or implicitly) by wearing this watch it means I had to spend, and can thus afford for status items that cost $XXX,XXX. A major value of many luxury products is in the communicative value to make such statements while wearing the product. Luxury isnt just about rewarding yourself, but also in being able to effectively communicate to the right audience your status, power, and success. It doesnt matter how many people recognize that a Richard Mille watch is expensive, but rather that the right people will recognize it and know what it means. Therefore, maintaining a high price allows Richard Mille customers to authentically communicate their status in life as a function of having a certain (high) level of disposable income sufficient to drop this much money on a timepiece.
Aesthetics are completely secondary to the notion that "I have more money than you."

(26,044 posts)They look like someone took all the worst ideas from Invicta, combined them all together, and jacked up the price ten-thousand-fold. For that, you can get top-end watches from the "big three" Swiss watchmakers (a group which are a significant level of quality above Rolex, Omega and the like), and have change left over.

(2,097 posts)Its not just that the watch is silly looking and a testament to his selfishness. He could have spent $5000 on an extremely expensive watch, had it be better looking, equal quality, and given $495,000 to charity, if he was bound and determined to spend half a million that day. But this, from the article, stands out:
I took a chance and grabbed the gun and wrestled them to the ground. They were trying to pull the trigger, Belhassen said.
Four shots rang out during the struggle, the jewelry dealer said, and one of the slugs struck a woman in the leg who was sitting at the restaurant with her boyfriend.
Why would someone struggle with armed robbers? I hope this woman sues the crap out of him. She wouldn't have been shot if he hadn't decided that his watch was more important than all the innocent bystanders' lives.

(2,971 posts)Silly looking? An arguable point. Calling him "selfish", though....would you apply that descriptor to anyone who buys a half million dollar painting, car, collectable, etc.? I would still disagree, but that would at least be consistent.
As for suing someone who defends themselves against an armed attacker, did you read the part where one of the robbers was choking him with a gun to his head? He was quite rightly in fear of his life. Any injuries which resulted from on the attackers shooting the gun as he defended himself are wholly the fault of the the robbers themselves, not their victim.

(65,085 posts)That's twice what our house is worth!
A $10,000 watch & a $490k condo on a golf course (including furnishings & decor) would be a half-million better spent, for me!
I've got a really nice Movado. I got it from the company & the model lists at around $2,200. I'd take that over the one in the picture, 100 times over!

(54,414 posts)Every time I try to wear one, the metal or plastic irritates my skin beneath it and I get a nasty, itchy rash.
As for other places to live, in most of my fantasy places, $500K might get you a guest bathroom. I'm talking about a high floor on Central Park South, overlooking some major Swiss lake, someplace along the Quai Montebello in Paris, a nice spread on the Mauna Lani grounds on the Big Island, a big house with an enclosed garden and a fountain in the Barri Gòtic in Barcelona, etc. In other words, dream on.
