Alabama is moving ahead with plans to host full-capacity college football games at Bryant-Denny Stadium this coming season, athletic director Greg Byrne announced Monday.
Byrne tweeted a short statement after news earlier in the day that the school would be returning to in-person instruction without restrictions on classroom capacity in the fall. Byrne said they will continue to monitor medical guidelines "as we have all along."
According to data from the New York Times, Alabama has among the lowest vaccinations rates in the country with 13% of people receiving one shot.
Bryant-Denny Stadium, which boasts a capacity of 100,077, is scheduled to host seven football games next season starting with the home opener on Sept. 11 against Mercer.

(16,508 posts)But we could see dramatically lower daily case numbers by then assuming the vaccine rollout continues to accelerate and the new variants dont end up being resistant to the vaccine. Im hopeful but Ive also learned that this virus can dash any hope you have in an instant.

(36,747 posts)The freshman class will bring the virus along with them. Same goes for public and private secondary education.
Then it will spread to adult anti-vaxxers and the unvaccinated.
That will be the third wave I am predicting.

(36,747 posts)What about the ones who refuse it and the vaccinated who are asymptomatic carriers?
Piling 100K in a venue like a football stadium this fall is insanity.
But hey, its AL anyway...so go for it.

(2,753 posts)are that critical mass of vaccinations is reached this summer even with some holdouts, so I wouldn't bet against things being pretty normal by then.

(36,747 posts)This virus is becoming endemic and will continue to mutate.
Lets see if I am right in one year. But my money is on the virus joining the list of endemic human corona viruses.

(2,753 posts)that we might need booster shots for each year. I do believe, like it or not, that political pressure in both parties will be too much for any continued restrictions at the State level at the point of all adults being able to readily receive the vaccine by end of summer.

(3,056 posts)Real testing setup (enough for the population) from the beginning the data curve would have pointed that it is already endemic in our country. Its not going away...ever.
I look forward to our new syringed overlords.

(36,747 posts)That plus schools reopening for in person learning is enough for a third, but smaller wave.
Just like fall 1919 to winter 1920.
Sometime in 2022 we will hit 1,000,000 dead.
