He is 78 years old. I don't think he wants to wait around for the party to come to it's senses. Just a hunch.

(24,396 posts)The fact that he is no longer majority leader may change things.

(21,606 posts)until 2022 in the hope of being majority leader again. If he does get majority leadership again, life will be hell for us. It must not happen.

I suck at predicting things like this, so take that as you will. But maybe....

Dog still has to go walking regardless of the weather. Are you sure you don't have room for a couple of hillbillies and an oversized dog?
Re: Moscow Mitch. I think his vote depends on whether or not there exists kompromat that ties him to illegal money from Russia.

(8,329 posts)(KY has a Democratic governor who will likely appoint a democratic replacement). That seems fitting if he knows republicans are going to try to punish him by removing him from leadership if he votes to convict.

(3,434 posts)Makes it less likely that he would retire, but he might just say the heck with it.

(17,696 posts)The party was over, literally, if he stayed In the game and that people are going to be voting against him ame supporting Mike Pence and Nikki Haley in 2024. Call me a dreamer but I think hes going down

(45,020 posts)I don't see how any self-preserving Republican can vote for acquittal. It's literally an indefensible position. A vote for Trump now would be such a liability with everyone except there very ones that mounted the insurrection. But we're talking Republicans here. They've done dumber things and have shot themselves in the feet many times before. The koolaid is very potent.

(13,921 posts)The core of the trump supporters wanted the violent insurrection to succeed and overthrow of democratic government. Thats the Republican base. For many of these senators thats a majority of the voters in their future primaries.

(21,606 posts)Mitch holds out hope for 2022. Therefore, he will probably not vote to convict and not retire. If he can hang in there, he wants to be majority leader again. It would only take one Senate seat to put him back in the role of chief obstructionist.

(54,436 posts)I think he still votes to acquit.
Moscow Mitch has no loyalty except to himself, and no shame at all. He also has no pity or code of morals. To vote to convict, you need at least a trace of a conscience, and that would be a significant departure from the McTurtle we know.
I'm not saying it's impossible, since Trump's behavior has no rational defense. I'm just saying that rational thinking rarely lays a role in how McTurtle acts or votes. Eventhing he does, he does with an ulterior motive. If it wold double his wife's net worth, he would vote to have Trump dumped from Air Force One at 39000 feet halfway to Palm Beach. He will only vote to convict if he sees an advantage in it. If he sees none, he will not convict another Republican--for anything.

(3,384 posts)Plus, I think he gets off on plotting and planning. He would never be able to sit on the sidelines and not be involved. He loves his power too much.

(22,497 posts)So many of the insurrectionists are going to jail and they all have families and friends. I bet a lot of them are waking up to the true monster that Trump is. And with that they are not going to like people who continue to support him, especially when they or their loved ones are in jail and he is walking about free.
I think they are lost unless they vote to convict; of course I don't think they all realize that.
