for your role in helping Trump get elected. Every A.M. he had Trump on the line back in 2016 - Trump calls were a regular feature.

Modern American political history in a nutshell, and one of the best indictments I've read on what the GOP let itself become - just to win a few more elections than it should have.

What people do not realize is to Lee politics was sport. It did not matter what team he was on. He was not an ideologue. He would give me his thoughts on what Democrats should do in certain races. I had his band play at a college beach weekend. He played guitar. Early on he did not realize that I was running a Lt. Gov campaign. He was on the other side. We would meet at a bar each week and he would tell me what they were going to do at a press conference. I would take it a back and we would ambush them. He finally figured it out. We won. Laughed about it later.

I'm sure I don't need to tell you that Lee Atwater isn't exactly a popular figure in Democratic circles or chat rooms such as DU.

But I hear you: there was a lot more to the man than his public persona as a political strategist and GOP "black monk."

Above all, he died so young - 40, as you know - and whatever wrong he might have done, he still left behind friends and loved ones who no doubt miss him to this day.

I was in high school during the Bush and (early) Clinton years. I was as fascinated by politics then as I am now (probably more so), and I distinctly remember being shocked that he passed on so soon after becoming a nationwide household name in the '88 campaign.

You know, it's my belief that Atwater did the nation a favor - in a roundabout way.

Were it not for his skill, Mike Dukakis would've won - and however hard he tried, he would've been saddled by the S&L crisis, the hangover from the Reagan debt binge, and the inevitable recession.

The GOP would've surely won in '92 - and at the hand of some rabid ideologue in the Gingrich mold.

That's would we would have had - instead of the Clinton years.

Thanks again, Edwcraig, for sharing your first-hand knowledge - which always adds so much.

Lee would always talk your head off. He was one of the first people I knew that had a mobile phone. You know the big ones that had huge batteries. He died of brain cancer on the right side of his brain. He told a friend of mind that he knew the tumor was caused by the mobile phone. Ironic that a guy that got Republicans elected and that Republicans opposed product safety legislation died becuase of a failure in product safety. And he knew it.

A tragedy, twice over.

Once, for dying at such a young age.

And twice, for being so brilliant - and yet lending his talents to such undemocratic and nefarious ends.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but I think he himself became aware of the contradiction, and lived to wish he had done it differently.

But you can acquire all you want and still feel empty. What power wouldn't I trade for a little more time with my family? What price wouldn't I pay for an evening with friends?

It took a deadly illness to put me eye to eye with that truth - but it is a truth that the country, caught up in its ruthless ambitions and moral decay, can learn on my dime.
