I also hope this young boy will also go to a good place. Just really sad.

I know you are a mandatory reporter Skip but I believe I would have kept the boy overnight as well, hoping the mom would come back.... The DUer in the OP won't be in trouble will she?

Teachers and school employees are particularly cautious both because they are mandatory reporters but also because they're fair game for accusations of abuse or inappropriate behavior.

I've had a lot of careers but nothing except education ever gave me the chills about how a nutty parent or a pissed off teen can turn your life around.

Creepy.

I'm pretty confident that anyone in authority won't hold this against the DUer.
