Trump must believe that he can do a self-pardon. Otherwise, he would not be turning on Pence LaMouffette Jan 2021 #13

Yup. The unlimited power of the president to pardon must be restricted before the next Trump. LaMouffette Jan 2021 #21

The Supreme Court would love to take that case - it's one of the biggest open questions in jurisprudence: What exactly is the extent of the pardon? Answering that would actually serve to increase the power of the court over the executive branch in critical ways.

It's also worth noting that Trump is currently getting legal advice from none other than Rudy Guiliani.

On MSNBC last week, Nicolle Wallace was talking about the "failure of imagination" that explained our being blind-sided by 9/11 in 2001 and now by the Capitol Hill riot. That describes the entire Trump phenomenon. In our wildest dreams, we never thought we would have a president this evil, this criminal, this lawless, this treasonous, this unhinged.

Now we know better and we had better get ready for the next one.

or the role of government, for that matter. He is, in many respects, the epitome of the concept of entitlement.

Pence was chosen by Trump for one purpose, and only one purpose - to give him a Get Out Of Jail Free Card at the end of his term, in case things went south. Pence won't do that, and Trump is realizing that in one week's time, he's going to be facing financial and legal ruin. I suspect he may try to fire Pence, but it's a meaningless gesture at this point - even if he could (he can't according to the Constitution), Pence is an elected official - he has been neither impeached nor is he under indictment. He will likely end up getting what Trump won't - a pension, protection for life, an opportunity (albeit slim) of going onto some other political opportunity.

Pence is no doubt having the last laugh here.
