My big privilege is VA is keeping me from shifting off this earthly coil too soon. It's a level of medical care I believe everybody should have the privilege of. But no doubt, I am privileged in a society of 350,000,000 people with all sorts of privilege: good and bad, small and large.

My special very special small personal privilege was getting to speak with Rev Jesse Jackson, one on one, just me and him in the kitchen of the Rainbow House in Chicago about twenty-five years ago. Special, special, special.

Within weeks of that, a woman exercised her privilege when she asked my partner why "that cracker" was serving her party and told him I had to go. I had the privilege of good education and understanding where she was coming from, left the function. I was hurt, but I certainly understood.

Likewise, I also have white privilege. It got me jobs when I was younger when the only other candidate was black. I didn't ask for it and I did not realize exactly what it was. It wasn't a privilege to keep blacks down, it was the privilege of knowing I was always going to get this job, or the next or the one after it - a privilege my black brothers and sister did not have. I don't want the white aspect of that privilege, but I do want that privilege extended to all my brothers and sisters: the privilege of being given a chance based on what the individual offers to the job and not on any other thing: race, gender, party or belief system, and the knowledge that the next or the job opening after that is going to be theirs.

White privilege didn't give me hope, it made having to have hope unnecessary, it made paying attention unnecessary.

It wasn't until I thought with the election of Barack Obama that racism was dying out that with a shock I found out how wrong I was and what a deep well of racial hatred we really had. And this was the first time I finally saw what white privilege really was: an opportunity to ignore and deny what was never hidden and was going on around me the whole time.
