(8,209 posts)and the duly elected President-elect with rule by autocrat through the use of violence and terror.
The members of the legislature were threatened.
The machinery of our elections was threatened.
The Vice President and his family were threatened.
Sounds pretty coup-ish to me.

(18,486 posts)A coup is the removal of the existing government by force.
These people were not trying to remove the existing government. They were trying to prevent a new government from coming into existence.

(8,209 posts)Adherence to our Constitution is what defines our government.
This was an attempt to replace the Constitution with rule by autocrat and mob.
Had it succeeded, it would have been the destruction of the federal government as legally constituted.
Sounds like a coup to me.
As I understand it, the phrase "coup d'état" means a blow against the state.
The only way this doesn't qualify is if, like Louis XIV, Trump is entitled to say, "The state is me."

(8,209 posts)They seem to think it was a coup attempt:

It seems to me they have a lot more experience with coups and coup attempts than we do.
We are supposed to be a government of laws, not men (or women). To attempt to derail the proper functioning of government at the level of head of state is attempting to decapitate the legal government.
But we're arguing semantics. Surely you agree this was an attack on democracy.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)I'm in no mood to argue about it. It's not that important.

(8,209 posts)are now making that exact point.
It isn't a coup, the left is exaggerating. It was just a protest that got out of hand (and besides the worst actors were ANTIFA infiltrators).
Coup as commonly understood is an attempt to overturn the government, which in this case means the orderly transition of power from one administration to the next duly elected administration.
It was an attempt to overthrow the Biden administration even before it took office.
We've gone too far in this country sugar coating the reality of what's been happening.

The answers that lie between Yes and No can't be Yes, buts. Plus Antifa reptilians are crossing the Mexican border illegally to vote in favor of Sharia Law in this poll.

(8,209 posts)(which is the German for coup).
He knew he'd get what amounted to a slap on the wrist, since the Bavarian courts were all far-right, He even had the support of some of the members of the government he was trying to overthrow.
It was still an attempted coup.

(2,072 posts)The imagery that came out of it was the goal -- the mirage of democratic infallibility that our country has been able to maintain on the world stage is completely shattered and it paves the way for a real and swift coup in the future.

We dodged a bullet with his dumb ass but there's Cotton on the horizon. I say Cotton because he was smart enough not to latch onto the shiny object of objecting to EC ballot counting like the ambitious upstart Hawley who thought he was on his way to a big share of magat support for 2024.

(11,758 posts)No doubt about it. He needs to be removed but it's unlikely to happen. My hope is that he can be neutered until he leaves.
...it was a culmination of months if not years of trump's propaganda all focused on him seizing power should he not be legitimately re-elected...remember, if he lost, it was rigged?
...this is why it's imperative Congress strongly asserts the rule of law and redeems the integrity of our Constitution and it's impeachment and removal process...
...there has never been a more worthy president for impeachment and removal...
...we dodged a bullet this time...but without a strong, timely and effective impeachment and removal of trump we may not be so lucky next time...
...if we don't put more skin and teeth into our impeachment process, it'll be meaningless...
...dangerously meaningless...

(54,301 posts)use the 25th, and censoring is way too mild, it has to be impeachment even though McTurtle and the republicans are still the same obstacle they were before.
The Speaker has to go through with it though even if time runs out resulting in it being only symbolic in value. That's ok with me though as the orange turd will be the only president in history, and probably ever, to be impeached twice.
Twice.

Now, if you'd asked, was this a coup attempt by the Three Stooges, then I'd probably agree with you.
A coup attempt might've been what Trump was hoping for, but from what I saw, it looked more like an unorganized mob riot.

(53,061 posts)A coup d etat has several common key ingredients
1) central organizing group with a plan to take over institutional power
2) multi location attacks to take over control of media
3) infiltration of military command structure enabling key units (usually capital tank units) to take physical control of the capital.
Could go on but this wasn't close to being a coup attempt. It wasn't treason.
It was an unruly seditious mob. Trying to undermine orderly government is sedition, not treason (which requires helping an enemy during war) or a coup d etat which is an organized attempt to take over control of government.
It was sedition, an attempt to disrupt the normal legal order, a serious crime.
