General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsInteresting "average Joe" reaction
to the Pres. debate, from another board I post on, which is non-political but for a discussion of this:
"I don't plan on voting, wasn't going to watch the debate - but did & Romney sounded OK, until he mentioned cutting off PBS - those are fighting words. Unless PBS could get other funding, that could mean the end of Eastenders [a Brit serial show] for us... There's so many wasteful things they spend our tax dollars on - why mess with the 1 channel that's been teaching children for 40yrs???"
Funny how the PBS thing really pissed people off.

(24,634 posts)He was talking to the American people not trying to appeal to political fiends on the net. We live for that, the American people see that as an attack. And the American people tend to watch the first debate more than the other debates. The other debates are for us.

(7,759 posts)And another swipe at education. You know the privileged believe that educating the masses is a threat even from pre-K. Kids might actually grow up and try to be kind to others and think for themselves. Then where would this country be?

(34,108 posts)whatever the crap TV du jour is. I personally love watching the Masterpiece Mystery series, all the good documentaries (esp. Ken Burns), nature shows, etc. Good stuff.

You don't have to be a socialist to admit that the programming on PBS is far superior to what you can get elsewhere. And, a lot of us can't afford to shell out $1,000 a year for basic cable just to get the History or Nature channel.
Yo_Mama_Been_Loggin
(107,956 posts)Mostly shows like Swamp Loggers, Ice Road Truckers or Pawn Stars.
So it becomes even more important the PBS funding stays.

(16,230 posts)Tonight is a marathon of "Cajun Pawn Stars", then later "Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy".
They also have things like "American Pickers", "Ice Road Truckers", "Stan Lee's Superhumans", and "Sex in the Ancient World".
You can't buy the quality of PBS on the private market.

(9,444 posts)Does Mitt care how much people love PBS children's shows? Obviously not! To him the only "people" that matter are corporations.

(4,119 posts)...is on a stoop...an apartment stoop. According to Mitt, poor people live in apartments. Also it has racially mixed kids. Mitt wasn't going to expose his little boys to that when he could put them in kiddie prep school.

(26,877 posts)Almost everyone in the oft-touted "prime demographic" fucking GREW UP with those shows!
Besides this, the most important program that tells the story of the American experience... "American Experience" is a PBS staple.
What are they thinking???

(21,865 posts)I watched it from it's inception here in los angeles since like 1985 or thereabouts. they stopped airing it just as Dirty Den came back into the series. I was so devastated because I was such a big fan.
I'm glad you still get it. I miss old Albert Square.
Lex
(34,108 posts)online. You can look up the episode where Den comes back and then watch from there? Youtube has them and maybe a another site. I hate that they stopped showing it there for you. We have a pretty vocal EE Club here in NC and every year we help raise money at the bi-annual fundraisers to make sure the local PBS (WUNC) doesn't dare stop EE. Cheers!

(58,648 posts)I was kind of reflecting on how many ads Romney just wrote for Team Obama.
The Big Bird/PBS one was low hanging fruit. Meanwhile, as expected, the fact checkers are eviscerating Romney this week. There's going to be a bit of copy for the next go-around.

(75,480 posts)funding to PBS is less that 1% of the budget, so cutting off funding to them wouldn't make a dent in our budget deficit.
Arkansas Granny
(31,515 posts)The savings from cutting the funding for PBS is a very small drop in a very large bucket. The only reason to mention it is because the freepers thinkit's too liberal.

And so on.
Seems the only people who want to defund PBS are crabby hardcore wingnut whiners who get hot and bothered with anything that doesn't look like Fox News.
I'm willing to bet if Fox News got government subsidies, they wouldn't say a word.
