The creation of Fox News and other RW outlets gave Republicans an outlet to push propaganda and right wing talking points without any accountability. Of course, not being accountable to actual facts has fueled a race to the bottom as ring outlets have essentially become a fan fiction competition for crazy conspiracies that is helped by foreign disinformation campaigns that amplify divisive memes.
Now, you have a major party that is just fueled by conspiracies and racism that is incapable of responding to an actual crisis. It is not just Trump. Trump would not be nearly as destructive without the whole right wing infrastructure that has grown over the years.
