In the past, the networks would use exit polls quite heavily to determine the winner....that is until Gore/Bush. When that happened, they moved to very conservative statistical models.

Fox, seems to be using a bit of more of a hybrid so they can call the results sooner. Requires some good statisticians/economist to do that, but they have the money to hire them. And so, can call the races faster...which gives them the better ratings.

Don't know why the Trump campaign is furious, when it became obvious Romney lost to Obama, Fox unzipped its fly and pissed all over him and Karl Rove.
