...and compare the counts to what the scanners are counting, to verify the software is doing it's job accurately!!

There is too much room for hackery. Right now, the counting is being done by proprietary software, in the dark bowels of computers. So, you are exactly right-- we need to verify the accuracy of the tallies.

We fought hard to get rid of touchscreen voting machines. But we are not getting the full benefit of paper ballots if we cannot audit them. Or watch them be counted.
