Hi there folks. Kirk Bangstad here, owner of the Minocqua Brewing Company.
We can finally close the chapter on our Biden sign fight with the Oneida County Board. Posted below is an email to our lawyer sent from the Oneida County Corporate Counsel Brian Desmond saying the County would not be levying any fines for our magnificent Biden sign. If you remember, the County Board suggested that they would fine us daily until we took it down because it was too big.
We reminded Attorney Desmond that the Oneida Ordinance was illegal in light of the 2015 SCOTUS decision in Reed vs. Town of Gilbert. You can read about that here if you'd like: https://mtsu.edu/firs.../article/1472/reed-v-town-of-gilbert
He must have realized we were right.
So now, what do we do with all that money we raised selling t-shirts now that we don't have to pay any fines? Well, we hope you agree with our decision. We hit our goal of raising $17K, $8.5K of which was originally earmarked towards paying potential fines, and the other $8.5K towards unseating Republican county board members. We originally targeted our own county board rep, Lance Krolcyk, but we're not sure he's actually the worst Republican on the board, and we've got some time before the next election to think about it.
We're going to donate $5K to the Oneida County Democratic Party so they can recruit candidates, and the Minocqua Brewing Company will hold on to the rest to give to progressive county board candidates it thinks can bring this county into the 21st century.
The paperwork for County Board candidates needs to be filed before the end of this year, so we're going to get to work on finding candidates immediately after the election on Nov. 3. We will update you with our slate of candidates as soon as we find them.
We hope all of you from around the country who bought t-shirts, there were over 2,000 of you!, think this is a good use of your money.
Thanks again and be patient with those t-shirts, we were overwhelmed with your positive responses and are diligently getting them mailed out.
And of course, if this makes you happy and you want to continue supporting us while we're closed for the winter due to the gross mismanagement of Covid by Trump and the Wisconsin Republican majority legislature who likes to sue our governor every time he tries to keep us safe, thus elongating our state being a hotspot and damaging our economy, feel free to keep the orders coming in.
