George Takei: If Amy Coney Barrett had served on a trustee of a school that barred minority teachers

George Takei
@GeorgeTakei
If Amy Coney Barrett had served on a trustee of a school that barred minority teachers, she would not be up for SCOTUS. That she could be a trustee for a school that does not hire gay teachers speaks volumes about what people still think is okay when it comes to discrimination.

I met him twice at Star Trek conventions.

He has genuine love in his heart.

His command and that vessel are integral to the plot.

For years, at ST conventions, he jokingly lobbied fans to write petitions to get him his own TV show and make him a Captain.

He got it in the movie.

I would love for him to be right about the first part ... but under this administration ...no.

There are several possibilities - that os just the most obvious.

It could, for instance, be reduced, and the last hired first fired. I'd settle for two at this point. Pensions, yes, but a small price to pay for the future of the nation.

And no, I don't like Gorsuch, but he is squeaky clean personally. That cannot be said about Kavanaugh or Barrett.

This country has shown just how comfortable it is with outright racist statements and views. His statement minimizes how insidious and acceptable racism is in this country. I find the tweet offensive as part of the community of people being regularly accosted and killed in America.

Look at Trump. The Republicans -- who are the driving force behind Amy Coney Barrett AND Trump -- are perfectly fine with instances of both her racism and Trump's. It hasn't killed her chances and it hasn't killed Trump's either in 2016 or now. After all, she found that the use of the word n****r didn't make for a hostile work environment in Smith v. Illinois Department of Transportation ( https://cases.justia.com/federal/appellate-courts/ca7/18-2948/18-2948-2019-08-21.pdf?ts=1566397831 ). So, clearly racism isn't a factor in her nomination. Having a couple of black children whom one has adopted doesn't disprove racism either. Look at the two white mothers who killed their black adopted children and were alleged to have been racist. The photographers and videos they took are certainly indicative of it. So, I maintain what I said. Racism would not, and has not, killed her chances. The same as her homophobia hasn't killed them either.
