General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsBreaking: NYTimes has gotten ahold of Trump's tax returns.
And they're as bad as we thought.
No wonder he's been fighting so hard
Donald J. Trump paid $750 in federal income taxes the year he won the presidency. In his first year in the White House, he paid another $750.
He had paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years largely because he reported losing much more money than he made.
As the president wages a re-election campaign that polls say he is in danger of losing, his finances are under stress, beset by losses and hundreds of millions of dollars in debt coming due that he has personally guaranteed. Also hanging over him is a decade-long audit battle with the Internal Revenue Service over the legitimacy of a $72.9 million tax refund that he claimed, and received, after declaring huge losses. An adverse ruling could cost him more than $100 million.
The tax returns that Mr. Trump has long fought to keep private tell a story fundamentally different from the one he has sold to the American public. His reports to the I.R.S. portray a businessman who takes in hundreds of millions of dollars a year yet racks up chronic losses that he aggressively employs to avoid paying taxes. Now, with his financial challenges mounting, the records show that he depends more and more on making money from businesses that put him in potential and often direct conflict of interest with his job as president.

(45,806 posts)reviewing them & finding problems. Investigations take a long long time, & get even more complicated as each new return is filed. Even though he has accountants prepare his returns, if he's convinced them to "take some chances" THEY are not the one being investigated, HE IS! This is the tip of a very large iceberg that appears to be melting

(19,259 posts)at $30 billion. That's the figure he uses for his net worth so he could be included in the Forbes 500 richest men. He won't make the Forbes 1,000,000 from here after. Don Jr. and Eric just started counting the change in their penny jars this evening. Ivanka married money, but if they investigate Jared that might change as well! This year we will certainly be closer to 50/50 due to Covid. That said, a major story dropped immediately before more than half the electorate turns out is absolutely going to have more impact than dropping that story weeks before the election where the impact will not be as concentrated.
Dropping the story now is fine... if they have something equally large to drop in the days immediately before the election.

Background:
Using the Google Search Engine, I came up with two identical search phrases and added 'site:democraticunderground.com' to the second phrase. This allows a search of the Democratic Underground website to be conducted. If you care to replicate any of the searches above, there are quite a few interesting stories. The resultant record size of each search speaks volumes to the amount of investigative reporting that has already been done.
Panama Papers:
The Panama Papers are 11.5 million leaked documents that detail financial and attorneyclient information for more than 214,488 offshore entities.
The Paradise Papers:
The Paradise Papers are a set of 13.4 million confidential electronic documents relating to offshore investments that were leaked to the German reporters Frederik Obermaier and Bastian Obermayer, from the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The Paradise Papers are essentially version 2.0 of the Panama Papers, albeit smaller with 1.4 terabytes of data leaked compared with 2.6 terabytes in the 2016 Panama Papers leak.
Russian Business Ties:
In January 2017, BuzzFeed News reported the existence of the unverified TrumpRussia dossier (also called the Steele dossier), which alleges connections between Trump associates and Russia. In response to ongoing questions in May 2017, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said that Trump has no business connections to Russia. In addition, both Trump and his son have also reiterated Trump has no business connections to Russia.

(23,606 posts)They say that the NYT story reveals that Trump inflated income to get loans, inflated expenses to get tax deductions, which we already suspected from many reports and comments, but this is evidence of it.
They played Trump's response from a press conference and predictably his first words were, "Fake news. All of it."
Their political analyst said he belueved that this might actually affect his base numbers. He expects to see buttons popping up overnight that say, "I paid more taxes than Donald Trump.
If this comes up in the debate, which is likely, how will Biden respond to the fake news excuse? I hope he's got a good comeback.

(16,831 posts)I got the Hulu 1 month free trial Fri Eve so I could watch S2 & S3 of The Handmaid's Tale, after borrowing S1 from the Library late last year.
It was so compelling (brutal show, brilliantly done) I just had to keep watching. So I didn't have any news until w ? 5 eps to go, I caught a quick comment on fb from an acquaintance.
Wait... What!?!
She gave me a quick answer, I made a quick comment, and went back to binging the rest. So I'll just say...
Bwaahahahaaaaaaa 😜😝😂😂🤣🤣
...for now. (haven't gone to sleep yet)
What an amazing piece of news to be the first thing I read about!!!
Can't wait to read the details, and comments on DU later this afternoon!

(4,523 posts)"not paying taxes" is just going to sound "smart" by his base as in "a lot of big business don't pay much if any taxes" etc.
But if it's money laundering, false reporting, numbers not adding up, etc - that's a different (*I hope) story.
