GOP candidate finishing hotly contested North Texas Senate race in quarantine after wife tests posit
AUSTIN The coronavirus has sidelined one of the leading Republican candidates in the final week of a hotly contested special election for a North Texas senate seat.
State Rep. Drew Springer of Muenster is in quarantine after his wife tested positive for COVID-19, he said.
Were doing what Texans should do, which is if you are affected, quarantine so the rest of Texas can stay open and go to work, he said.
While the Republican said he will be campaigning virtually and sending surrogates to candidate forums, the twist could give a leg-up to competitors like Dallas salon owner Shelley Luther, whose campaign just received a $1 million infusion from a conservative mega-donor.
COVID-19 has thrown a wrench into the works of campaigns that often rely on big, in-person events and door-knocking to get out the vote. While many candidates have gone virtual, others are still holding in-person gatherings, including several fundraisers set to take place in Austin this week for both Democratic and Republican candidates, according to a schedule released Monday.
