Some Americans say that the United States should withdraw from the United Nations, that the city of New York and the UN should negotiate over an agreement to sell the UN headquarters building and let the UN go somewhere else?
My next door neighbor has been saying for years to me, "America doesn't need to be in the UN".
What do you think?

(6,149 posts)Only a true isolationist would think that. We are a melting pot of the world. How could we isolate ourselves from the countries that we have such very human ties to?

(63,221 posts)Is it just because the UN won't allow us to be big bullies around the world or is there more to it than that?

(1,648 posts)Why? Republicans only want death and destruction, reaping the rewards of others misery and they like using the U.S. Super Power status to bully and conquer other countries to cash in on more rewards. Everything they spew about God, the flag, Ma, and apple pie is bullshit cover for their Mammon worship.

(3,002 posts)At first, they were Birchers concerned about some sort of Communist plot to fluoridate the water and control the government from the shadows.
Theres less paranoia about fluoridation now, but its still based on conspiracy bullshit.
Trump thinks its a good idea. Thats all anyone needs to know.

(19,107 posts)The UN has been great for America, it's stopped wars before they had to be fought, it's fostered trade that has been an economic boon to the US, and it's helped all sorts of problems get resolved before they reach our chores. The UN is a great investment and saves us so much blood and money it pays for itself 100 times over.

Only reactionary assholes want it gone.

(17,396 posts)such a fringe RW concept, and think it is the jumping off point for some sort of debate about our future in the UN?

(11,744 posts)It is good to know the intentions and views of the people you are having a discussion with.
Without that, the posts appear to be trolling or stirring the pot.
The UN is a voluntary agreement between nations. The US has acted against the recommendations of the UN many times in the past and the UN has been powerless to stop the US. So have England, France, Russia, and China, who are on the Security Council. The only way things get done through the UN is if the US primarily but sometimes the other major nations need to back the UN up.
The UN is not a powerful organization unless the nations involved cooperate and make it so.
This idea of the UN having ANY kind of power or authority over the US is ridiculous.

Today though? Kinda goes against the current worldwide shift to fascism, authoritarianism, oligarchy, racism, and isolationism.

(12,590 posts)When I was 10 (I'm 71 now) I remember seeing barns with "U.S. OUT OF U.N. NOW!" painted on the side in huge letters. I didn't understand. To me the U.N. meant UNICEF, and I had even made a model U.N. building out poster board and a ping pong ball after my elementary class had taken a field trip there. I still don't understand the hatred some people have for working with other countries, although Trump's declaration of "America First!" did open the door to that kind of thinking.

(755 posts)sovereignty is important.
Baked Potato
(7,733 posts)has many success stories. I remember the U.N. opposing the Iraq war, but our sovereignty won out.
As far as UNICEF:
Charities With Low Overhead
While these might not be the most popular nonprofits, the following charities know how to get the most bang for their bucks. With less than 10 percent overhead, these charities will spend 90 percent or more of the money you donate on actual goods and services that support their missions.
UNICEF uses a variety of programs, from emergency response to education, to support children. They work in over 190 countries to improve the lives of children through a variety of initiatives.

(11,744 posts)Does your neighbor know that the UN inspectors and US inspectors had done their job and that Iraq was in compliance with the mandates against chemical weapons? Does your neighbor know that the US, against the wishes of the UN launched an invasion against Iraq based on false information? Does your neighbor know that the UN has NO military capabilities except for what member nations provide? Who was going to give the UN troops to "do something" in Iraq? The US, who was there against the UN's wishes? France, England, Russia?
I have no idea about UNICEF. The only real threat American sovereignty is Trump inviting other countries to meddle in our elections.

I find that both telling and a leading indicator... especially from one who professes to engage in discussion, yet dramatically avoids it. As though you were simply casting wide nets filled with rhetorical bait and fallacious chum for little more than a self-satisfaction.
That's what I think. As per your request.
