(26,045 posts)The G.O.P. obviously wants to frame this as another case of normal Americans under attack by "BLM thugs" and "Antifa hordes." It's a bit harder to frame it that way when your sports heroes are standing in solidarity with the demonstrators.

(25,183 posts)of the games are directly responsible for trigger-happy cops.

(2,123 posts)....we are distracted by "circuses" (television sports) ARE directly responsible. The Roman dictators gave the masses "bread and circuses" to distract the masses from what their leaders were doing. The NBA is our circus. The black folk who entertain us in these games have a kinship with many of the victims of police brutality. The "fans" should be made to recognize their civic responsibilities and not some right to entertained.

(25,183 posts)have been giving educational and economic opportunity to people of color by paying to watch those sports. If they really want to kill that goose laying the golden egg, see how that works out.
I don't watch any basketball, I'm a baseball and football fan, but maybe you'd feel like I do if it were some entertainment that you follow that got cancelled. Maybe Hollywood should stop making movies and TV shows, those are "circuses", too.

(25,183 posts)they're all entertainment. And the person I was responding to said that sports distracts us from social issues. My thesis is that if sports do that, so do other forms of entertainment.

(2,123 posts)You're right but corporate America isn't going to take much notice if a few black ballerinas "take a knee" before the ballet.-

(2,123 posts)....you do if something that I find entertaining was cancelled because the athletes had a greater sense of civic responsibility than we, as a whole, seem to have. We do not have a right to be entertained. Criticizing them is just selfish.

(29,322 posts)I think a lot of athletes realize with so much discrimination in society sports or entertainment is one of the few ways they can make it without being discriminated against. Even sports have discrimination -- Look up black coaches.

(29,322 posts)I'm a fan of these games and I support the players message. I'm tired of conservatives telling me as a sports fan what I want to see from my sports. Go Raptors!`

". . .It's more than sports. . .This is a time where we need to really not stay quiet. . ."
Reminder, this was a player who got called out in 2018 over homophobic tweets he sent back when he was a teenager. Glad to know he learned and matured since then.

(19,880 posts)the team to do something. As they are losing $$$, maybe the owners can network with the local politicians and pass legislation to reform policing in communities of color.
They need increased training in de-escalation, they need to get mental health professionals to be part of the team that responds to domestic related calls, they need to hire folks from the communities and send them to police academies so they can come back to their neighborhoods, etc. etc, etc.

(65,224 posts)In basketball, because all the teams protested, there were no forfeits.
Milwaukee was willing to forfeit the game, but their opponent said no, they would sit out too!
Then everybody agreed to sit.
In baseball, those games are being played today with 7 inning doubleheaders.
No $ is being lost.
The protest is strongly symbolic and forced some promises from the league & ownership for concrete actions.
Now, the threat of lost revenue was likely a strong motivator, but no revenue has so far, been lost.

(29,322 posts)I love the emotional display from the players, it is very moving. I can enjoy a game and not worry about Trump or conservatism.
