Kamala Harris's Indian Connections Spark a Social Media Frenzy

(Bloomberg) -- When Democratic Party presidential nominee Joe Biden picked Kamala Harris to be his running mate, it sparked a frenzy on the other side of the globe to track down her connections to Chennai, the southern Indian city where her mother was born.

On Twitter and Facebook, a flurry of users chronicled every minute link including her grandparents’ home in the Besant Nagar neighborhood, from where her mother Shyamala Gopalan set off as a teenager to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of California Berkeley. Undated photos surfaced of Kamala and younger sibling Maya in saris, smilingly posing with their grandparents during a visit. Many saw Harris a step away from the White House, and the de facto Democratic Party front-runner in four or eight years.

Writer Cauvery Madhavan captured the hysteria in a tweet: “If you’re wondering what that loud windy up sound is - it’s all of Chennai cranking the #SixDegreesOfSeparation machine!!

A prominent local newspaper, The Hindu BusinessLine, carried the headline: “Kamala Devi Harris and the destiny-changing coconuts from Chennai.” The story described Harris’s aunt praying for her victory in the California Senate elections nine years ago by breaking 108 coconuts, a popular religious ritual, at the local temple. The paper quoted Harris phoning her aunt to say, “Chithi (aunt), please pray for me and break coconuts at the temple.”

It occurs to me that some of these are a little too perfect. But I can live with it.

Politics is partly theater, imo. So staged is fine with me.

I've been tearing up easily since the announcement and this one had me teary eyed all over again. Thanks, ya bastard!

Like Obama, she seems genuinely nice.

Thanks so much for posting the cooking vids, TB. I love how genuine Kamala is, and how personable with everyone she meets. So sweet! I laughed so hard when she talked about how her mother guarded her recipes. "Oh, just a little of this, a little of that" was exactly the way my mother sometimes hedged on giving recipes away.

I was kinda proud of myself for recognizing dosa, thanks to chef Sohla El-Waylly. Before Bon Appetit imploded a few months back, watching BA's Test Kitchen videos was a great pandemic pastime. In this one, Sohla shows fellow chef Brad Leone how to make dosas from scratch. It's a really neat process and it doesn't look all that difficult, but having a store bought option makes total sense because of the fiddly amount of time involved.

Ethnic connections?

Rafael Cruz is ashamed of his Hispanic heritage and goes by
Ted.

Bobby Jindal is ashamed of his Indian ancestry and changed his
common name to be more white..

The Trump family pretended they were
Swedish when being German was inconvenient.

15. When Nikki Haley discussed her conversion to Christianity

she did not give as her reason that she believes Christianity is true. I thought that was rather interesting. Not only did she choose an English-sounding nickname, but she changed her nominal religion to the dominant one in this country as well.

Haley was raised in the religion of Sikh but converted to Christianity in her 20s. In an interview with the New York Times, Haley said she and her husband, "chose Christianity because of the way we wanted to live our life and raise our children."
