a great incentive for me to return to my college campus this fall. I'm curious, though, how many credits you have to have completed as a live person to get the degree after you're dead. Can you get the degree only if you croak in your senior year, or halfway through college, or any time after your tuition check clears the bank?

earned the degree in the obituary. But maybe they are hoping for a legacy gift or a gift so large it gets a "naming" opportunity, like one of the school's departments or the athletic center.

I’d really hate to see a spike in college student deaths.

Students die in wars, they die from cancer, they die in tragic car accidents. Sometimes a family member petitions, sometimes friends of the student. I attended a university exercise years back where one student with CF passed 2 weeks before commencement. Her photo was on a chair where she would have sat and her mother was allowed to cross the stage to accept.

Most schools already allowed for something like this with petition. With covid they've unfortunately realized they need to streamline the process and cut through the tape.

Death seemed like a distinct possibility, and at one point even an improvement.
