The self-styled plutocracy of sneering wealthy "elites" and their willingly owned Republican political puppets - who serve them at all levels of government - would seem to prefer it if we 150,000,000 Americans would somehow simply cease to exist, or at least have the decency to quickly and efficiently die.
At our own expense, of course.
Maybe these greedy cash snorters believe keeping only the "productive" half - you know, the non-evil responsible half - of Americans would be a much more controllable herd population...a herd which is big enough to keep the lights on, the luxeries flowing, and their whims and wants catered to.
If they can just shed themselves of the rest of us, well, that would be sweet.
Sorry for the cynicism, but it seems to me if they despise us that much, then it is a near certainty the convenience of our demise has been avidly discussed. And with their presidential robot malfunctioning so badly, it probably still is...
Such is the lack of humanity they evince.

(2,033 posts)Well, maybe a few would like to off us all. Like the Koch monsters.
But I think for the rest of them it's more like, "Wouldn't it be great if they all suddenly died? Or were abducted by aliens? Or fell into a black hole?"
It's wishful thinking I'm suggesting, and if true (which I believe it is), it demonstrates the depraved callousness which possesses them.
And given the power their wealth provides them, it also makes them exceedingly dangerous.

(8,994 posts)And it goes further back than that, too. Hell, it wasn't uncommon for Feudal lords to kill serfs just because they thought there were too many of them. The Spartans did as much to their Helots.
History is full of this behavior. We used to call it "eugenics", now it's moved from genetics-based purging back to what it always was: purging the poor.

(13,485 posts)In the present day balance of real vs. crazy, we are not that far historically or anthropologically from mass killing by design. I don't think it's necessarily the most likely scenario but safety and luxury in America, the America we have been living the last three generations is a click on a watch. Barbarian ways are closer historically than is seems and it's rampant in other parts of the world even now. If you want to get psychological about it, under the pressure of need and the protective towers of opulence, humans have a tendency toward the psychotic and the sociopathic. There are reasons why we have moral structures based on human understanding and interaction, argument and reason. We build cooperation. When we are separated by need and wealth, crazy things happen. I wouldn't underestimate how crazy humans can get when blinded by ideology not based on humanism.
Human beings can have wonderful esoteric dreams... as well as terrible dank nightmares. Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, The hoards of Martin Luther sacking Rome, The Third Reich, Pol Pot, Stalin... these representatives of mankind were hardly just yesterday. It's genetic, it's in out blood. We don't have the luxury of complacency.

(2,500 posts)Hopefully later than sooner. But nothing surprises me anymore. You're right. I'm pretty certain the majority of humankind is deeply hated by a minority segment of the elites. Keep your eyes open for something catastrophic. I will do the same. That's why they keep humankind at war with each other and deeply divided all over the world. It allows for convenient self-annihilation. When you look back at history just in our own lifetimes, the threat of extinction has remained prevalent throughout. When we manage to squeeze it out of our memory during our daily routines, the daily news of the world reminds us again and again that our enemies are out there and we have to get them before they get us.

This viewpoint has been carefully cultivated and I'm quite sure there is a belief that everything would be fine if only those pesky people were gone.

The will of the minority does NOT rule in America. The will of the MAJORITY does. SO deal with it or LEAVE.
We the People are going to repeal corporate personhood and get campaign finance reform on track. It may take time, but we will do it and y'all will have to find an island to move to if you want to be racist isolationists.

They clearly have not read about, or have forgotten, what happened to the French aristocracy in the late 18th century. Perhaps it is time to remind them.
