You're Invited: Stopping Pandemics Virtual Event with Dr. Fauci (National Geographic)

Dear Reader,

Since the beginning of the year, the COVID-19 pandemic has altered life as we know it. The virus has exposed every societal vulnerability and exploited every weakness it found. Along with amassing a staggering and still-growing body count, the past four months have reshaped the template of our shared experiences. Nothing is untouched: Work. School. Family life. Milestones like graduations and, sadly, funerals. Even the act of taking a walk or going to the grocery store can feel surreal. We pine for “normal.” And this is not yet done. We have a long way to go.

Under the threat of this plague, we again look to science to save us—just as we have in the course of humanity’s long relationship with infectious diseases. Today we watch in real time as scientists across the globe work at breakneck speed to defeat an invisible enemy. Many are optimistic that a vaccine will be available early next year, which would be the fastest vaccine development in history. This feat, when it happens, will be the result of a collaboration of innumerable heroes. It will be a silver lining to a terrible chapter of our lifetimes.

We’d like to invite you to a virtual discussion among scientists, journalists, historians, and local leaders about COVID-19 and how we can stop pandemics by applying the lessons of history’s deadliest outbreaks. The panel will offer insights from Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease specialist, in conversation with Good Morning America’s Deborah Roberts. In addition, featured speakers include Richard Conniff, writer of National Geographic magazine’s August cover story, “How Pandemics Change Us,” Dr. Jennifer Ashton, chief medical correspondent for ABC News, Nsikan Akpan, science editor for National Geographic, and Muriel Bowser, mayor of the District of Columbia.

Please join us for this exclusive conversation on
THURSDAY, AUGUST 13, AT 1 P.M. ET
