What about all those regular home schoolers ? We always hear how terrific they turn out.

(5,538 posts)All the kids seem to turn out OK. What's the rush to get them back in those buildings ? It couldn't be to help Trump's reelection, could it ?

(6,090 posts)in his case it is in spite of and not because of his parents. I work at a high school and am seriously considering whether or not I'm going back. I was only working there to pay my way through school so I might just quit.

(22,336 posts)And school would be weird with kids not being allowed to play together and having to wear masks. It wouldn't be like regular school anyway.

(87,054 posts)More traumatic and damaging than staying home for most in a stable environment. I have no idea what would be appropriate for those who don't.

My son made the software for the cameras for Perseverance that just launched.
My daughter is in charge of epidemiologists in our county.
My other daughter has a Masters in fine arts and in special ed.
They all are amazing.
We did fine. Parents can do fine if they listen to who their kids are.

(91,093 posts)And by necessity I mean groceries, rent, and utilities. I was a single mom for some years. Beyond that, America only maintained a middle class as long as it did because women went to work in droves and supplemented the falling income of their husbands.
And by aptitude I mean I, personally, never wanted to be a teacher of children, except the way any intelligent mother teaches her kids (like reading incessantly to them).
I always thought my mom could have done it as she was a born teacher, but the more Ive considered the family dynamics, the more Ive realized that despite her belief in our brains, the moderate ADD of her firstborn girl (me) and the ADHD of her second born (a son) would have been a severe trial for all of us. In those days, there were no such diagnoses. She was sure my uneven grades were a passive-aggressive statement about her, and that my brothers behavior was about her failure as a mother. Her third and fourth kids were much more what she expected, as neither had any of those traits, and were simply very bright without underlying complications. Mendelian average in our DNA, or some such.
I am very glad it worked out well for you. I know it can, but for many reasons I think you and your family are very much the exceptions.

(413 posts)Homeschool. It was seventh grade and he had kids beating him up because he was smart. Before we started to homeschool, one sweet teacher from England that knew Jon held my hands and said have your children read good books. They did and they had music lessons that were transformative and thought math...we also had fun days trying to figure out what Jon was saying without using his tongue.
What my babes learned is to learn how to learn. I was their librarian.

Of course, Barron will already be a basket-case, with a father like that.

Sending children to school now is sending the children into a virus petri dish to spread among the children that then take the infection home to their families.
We do not know the end result over a life of infections that seem mild during initial infection too.
Teachers and staff are also put at unnecessary risk.
