Americans are all living the Republican dream now: Paul Krugman for the NYTimes

Paul Krugman, writing for the New York Times, painfully explains that what is happening right here, right now, is nothing more than the natural endgame of all Republican, “conservative” philosophy. This is where it was all headed, and where it has always been headed. And anyone with half a brain should have seen it coming:

You see, the modern U.S. right is committed to the proposition that greed is good, that we’re all better off when individuals engage in the untrammeled pursuit of self-interest. In their vision, unrestricted profit maximization by businesses and unregulated consumer choice is the recipe for a good society.
----
The idea of a collective responsibility—of a social compact between Americans-- was always, implicitly, poisonous to that shiny, conservative ideal. And it has manifested itself in ways that we have seen unfolding during the course of this horrid pandemic, as conservative attitudes have been exposed and highlighted under the harsh glare of reality:

This rage is sometimes portrayed as love of freedom. But people who insist on the right to pollute are notably unbothered by, say, federal agents tear-gassing peaceful protesters. What they call “freedom” is actually absence of responsibility.
----
Everything they’ve believed and lived, oblivious or indifferent to the harm it caused, for decades, is now at mortal risk. And they would rather die than see the entirety of their prior existence trivialized, or worse, completely discredited.

The point, instead, is that they’ve sacralized selfishness, hurting their own political prospects by insisting on the right to act selfishly even when it hurts others.

What the coronavirus has revealed is the power of America’s cult of selfishness. And this cult is killing us.

Also, who's going to clean those cages? In that spirit they have removed them along with any other resource wastefully installed to ensure worker safety in their mines. We must all be willing to sacrifice and not count on little birds to do that for us.
Until the rapture comes, proving their point, you are instructed to ignore your lying eyes. Worker casualties are a necessary evil.

we can't have a fact-based national discussion about anything without it being polluted by lies and disinformation from those radio stations - completely ignored by the left.

and then we blame symptoms like social media and fox and wonder why

trump coordinated COVID denial with limbaugh/1500 radio stations and could trump/putin not have created this disaster without him and that is all dems needed to know to end this crap

so it's out of sight.

limbaugh and sons are repulsive liars and hurt thinking people's heads

left buys into the RW propaganda that a 95% monopoly somehow reflects demand for hate ignorance and suicidal stupidity

and americans have this really dumbass idea that people listen to what they want, all have access to all sources of information, and its just free speech. so what if it's the only free easy source for politics in most parts of 40 + states while driving and working, we can all just get a good job and buy the tech we need, go to the library, buy some books, etc

democrats keep saying the right exist in a bubble and alternative universe - so do democrats and the left if they think they can keep ignoring it

i can think of a few more

Places like Norway and New Zealand are more appropriately called late stage (advanced) capitalism.

Capitalism, per se, is not the problem. Deregulation is perhaps the biggest part of the problem. Citizens United ruling is part of the problem.

I don't see Krugman calling tRump-Republicon America "late stage capitalism".

Once driverless trucks force all the truck drivers into unemployment, and shelf stocking robots replace the workers in stores, we may see people completely unable to find jobs, no matter how hard they try. How do people live then, when they can't trade work for money? Cue Andrew Yang.

What is all the complaining and crying from the right all about?

They have pushed right-wing extremism for 40 years and we are at the epitome of their desires.
