Oregon leaders react to federal officers in downtown Portland

The cycle of violence must end. President Trump deploying armed federal officers to Portland only serves to escalate tensions and, as we saw yesterday, will inevitably lead to unnecessary violence and confrontation," Gov. Brown said in the statement sent to KATU News ...

"The consequences of Donald Trump unilaterally dispatching [federal] law enforcement into U.S. cities played out in Portland [with] a peaceful protester shot in the head. Trump & Homeland Security must now answer why [federal] officers are acting like an occupying army?" Wyden said ...

"Given Trump’s misuse of force against protesters outside the White House and elsewhere, the deployment of federal agents in Portland raises serious concerns. We need answers," Merkley said ...

4. What law gives Trump the right to send federal troops when the governor rejects them?

Unless the governor has requested help, how can federal troops just be sent? After all, the governor has access to the Oregon National Guard. If Trump can just send federal troops anywhere he wants, that seems close to martial law.
