(15,536 posts)I've been saying all along that Democrats have to take back the flag from the GOP who think they own the rights to it. I will fly mine for the first time since President Obama left office when Joe Biden is elected.

(8,731 posts)Spot on truth. This needs to be on a 24/7 loop at the VA Hospitals. It sickens me to see all the red hats, trump shit and vets for trump bumper stickers in the parking lot. I always leave the hospital very pissed, not patriotic or proud to see that at all. Just unbelievable to witness. This video is amazing and gives me much more hope than leaving my own VA hospital.

(15,801 posts)whether or not to share this with my brothers. Both are veterans.
The older brother did three tours in Vietnam; he still cries when some memories surface. He changed his registration from Independent to Democrat when W was ramping up the Iraq war; then he went to the local Democratic party office and signed up to volunteer. He went door to door for Obama, both campaigns. He was a solid Hillary supporter, although age and some heart issues denied him the door-knocking he enjoyed. He loathes Trump and does what he can to encourage votes for Biden.
The younger brother retired from the military one month before 9-11. In the course of his career he had been in some dicey situations but never saw combat. He'd gone from basic training to becoming an instructor in some classified procedures, earning and enjoying the respect as well as the promotions. He tried to re-up after 9-11, but his area of expertise had advanced during his phase-out and his request was denied. He fully supported W, and went all out for Trump. He remains an ardent Trump supporter, and views any other opinion as an assault on his years of service.
The two brothers speak frequently, but the younger one calls only on birthdays and Christmas. We keep hoping that he will come to his senses, that he will finally hear what his brother tries to tell him, that he will see Trump's abuse of the military for what it is. We're not holding our breath.
This video would be understood and appreciated by the brother who would likely shed a tear or two. It would be met with huffy umbrage by the other brother, and the distance between us would grow.
So, I'm still deciding.

(13,776 posts)I wouldn't send it to him, personally. If his own brother who's also a veteran won't sway him, an ad won't. Especially coming from someone he's had a long-standing political disagreement with. If he saw it on Facebook or somewhere random, maybe, but probably not from someone he's argued with in the past; he'll just dig in further.
So there's a big risk and little reward, IMO. I'm sorry your younger brother is like that; it would be very painful for me to have a sibling who supported Trump. I hope he comes around on his own eventually.

(15,571 posts)I am of the opinion most ex-military people understand what real leadership is. It is glaringly apparent we lack leadership in the place it is needed most. The Oval Office. That transcends politics. Show it to them.

The Trumps are not shy about proclaiming how much they have 'sacrificed'.
Visit to Arlington Cemetery reminded Donald Trump Jr. of all his family's 'sacrifices,' he writes

(6,148 posts)it's a little too long, the names of the unfamiliar flash by too quickly. Some names (speakers) are missing.
But it gets its point across. I hope veterans see it.

(21,447 posts)it is fast-paced. Some of the names are candidates this year. The right people will recognize them.
The overall message comes through in conscious awareness and in quick subliminal messages.
I like it. Makes me want a T shirt with a flag on it and the caption, "Not Trump"s Flag."

(2,270 posts)And about time too! It seems that at times we on the left cede the patriotism issue/angle to the repuglicans. WE have more patriotism in our little fingers than 99% of the right does. Being a patriot does not mean hugging the flag and shouting the loudest about how much you love America. It means holding the Constitution dear, it means recognizing when we as a nation fall short of the ideals that made us great and a beacon to the world and trying to remedy those shortcomings.
