(4,671 posts)In too many schools Robert E. Lee is held up as a gallant hero, and the Civil War is taught as "the war between the states."
Even in schools that don't endorse those values, children are not taught about slavery or the enormous benefit enslaved African-Americans bestowed on this country. They are not taught that the CSA were traitors who brought arms against our country and killed American men.
So, yeah, a form of hatred for our country is being taught, every time a kid sees a Confederate statue in a place of honor.

(9,867 posts)I learned all about American historical atrocities in high school (this was about twenty years ago). The Native American genocide, the horrors of slavery, the violent anti-labor movements. It was part of the curriculum. It was covered in the AP American History test (a national test).
There are plenty of idiots in this country. Unfortunately, they get all the attention.
But this idea these things are not taught is nonsense. This isn't the 1950s. This material has been in schools for ages. I have a lot of college friends who went on to be history teachers (I was a history major), so I know for a fact this stuff is being taught.
I can't speak to every school everywhere, especially in the South. But I hate it when people assert our educational system is still whitewashing everything. We haven't been for ages. People just say that because it suits their narratives about whatever Other they dislike.
Ignorant is going to ignorance. But I imagine most Americans know Columbus was not a great guy.
