The current 89-point difference between Republicans' and Democrats' ratings of Trump is the largest partisan gap Gallup has ever measured for a presidential approval rating in a single survey. Trump had previously registered 87-point gaps in late January and early February polls, conducted around the time of his Senate impeachment trial and ultimate acquittal.

The republican party has become a relatively small rump party consisting of southern racists plus the oligarchs. But the media will try to write their stories in the run-up to the election to get the reader/listener/watcher to infer that the country is "split 50/50" so they can sell ads for their horse race, like they always do. There are far more democrats than republicans in the country and that gap has been widening for a long time. The problem is that fewer democrats vote than republicans so, as usual, it all hinges on getting out the vote.

The University of Virginia Center for Politics detailed party registration last week and found that there were nearly 12 million more registered Democrats than Republicans across 31 states and the District of Columbia.

The analysis also found that 40 percent of all voters in party registration states are Democrats, while only 29 percent are Republicans.

63. His strongest demographic has always been white, no college degree.
Mon Jul 6, 2020, 12:28 PM
Jul 2020

The reason for the white component is obvious.

What about the no college degree component? First of all, one does not need to have a degree to be well informed and intelligent. But, Trump is aggressively and assertively ignorant. He is anti education and anti science. He speaks what, fifth grade level? Lower? He avoids reading. He appeals to those who did not like school, those who probably struggled or failed or were somewhat humiliated in school, those who as adults complain about paying taxes to support schools, those who vote against funding for schools, those who hated Obama probably because he sounded intelligent (and was intelligent) in addition to the racist thing.

Most other countries shunt students into programs where they are likely to thrive, to enjoy learning. But in this country we try to make everyone get a good "general education" which pretty much means some degree of calculus and Shakespeare. Society needs a wide variety of skilled craftsmen and women who are good at what they do and who enjoy what they do, who take pride in what they do. Even modest skills such as delivery or cab driver can be courteous and proud of it.

Our approach to education for all is also very expensive, not very efficient. But in a society owned by big for-profit industries and where the pursuit of happiness means accumulation of wealth at any cost (FOX News, big pharma, oil, come to mind) is it possible to change our approach to education and training?

Mon Jul 6, 2020, 05:35 PM
Jul 2020

I was truly worried at that point, basically pessimistic. I had long expected and predicted that Trump's atrocities would be steadily absorbed as the new norm, to the point he reached 45% on 538 at election day...just enough to pull out another electoral squeaker.

I really think it would have played out that way if not for coronavirus and George Floyd situation. Tragic pandemic and death but they allowed Donald Trump to be fully exposed as the ignorant, incompetent, despicable racist lying lowlife...everything that has always been his essence.

Now just keep the approval where it is. I'm not foolish enough to believe there is a lower shelf.

Our only concern is Biden coming across as old and not mentally sharp in the campaign and specifically the debates. I'm not going to totally ignore that variable. Everything tends to go back to the beginning. There were worries about that for a reason last fall and into early this year. Just because he set it aside in the one on one versus Sanders doesn't mean the concern was not valid, or eligible to resurface.

I'll be nervous as hell during that first debate, no matter what the polls look like beforehand. Many swing voters preferring Biden now still remember him as Obama's vice president, and not at current age. I would be less troubled at early to mid 70s than late 70s. Things go wrong.
