Karen Handel, the GOP nominee in the race for a competitive House seat in Georgia, was caught on video saying her opponent, Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath, needs to "look at issues beyond" her dead son.
Video of the Handel making the remarks was obtained by the American Independent Foundation.
Handel is running in a rematch against McBath, a freshman Democrat who was inspired to run for Congress after the Parkland, Florida, high school mass shooting in 2018 and after her Black son, Jordan Davis, was murdered at the age of 17 in 2012 by a white man angry that Davis and his friends were playing loud music in their car.
McBath defeated Handel for the seat in Georgia's 6th Congressional District in 2018. During the campaign, she ran ads highlighting her personal story and how it had sparked her interest in serving in Congress.

(10,849 posts)And a tone-deaf criticism--she needs to look beyond her dead son. Particularly when that tragic experience is absolutely aligned to what is churning throughout the country's conscience in real time, the senseless killing of young black men.
Handel needs to be swept away into the Deep Blue Sea. Hopefully, the voters in Georgia will do just that.

(35,454 posts)In 2010, Handel ran for Governor of Georgia,[1] narrowly losing the Republican primary to Nathan Deal, who portrayed Handel as overly supportive of gay rights and abortion rights.[2][3]
In 2011, Handel was appointed Senior Vice President of public policy at Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a charity focused on fighting breast cancer.[4] In this role, Handel pushed the charity to cut off Komen's funding to Planned Parenthood.[5] Following an uproar over the politicization of the charity, Handel resigned from Komen in February 2012.[6][7]

According to the Harris Interactive 2010 EquiTrend annual brand equity poll, Komen was once one of the most trusted non-profit organizations in America.[5][6] Komen's 2012 decision to discontinue funding for Planned Parenthood was controversial and brief, attracting widespread media attention and a significant decline in donations and participation at fundraising events.[7][8] Komen almost immediately reversed its decision and resumed its funding of breast cancer screening and other programs at various Planned Parenthood locations.[9][10] The organization has also been criticized for executive pay raises, administrative costs, affiliations with certain sponsors and claims that it used misleading statistics in advertising.[11][12][13] In six years from 2011 to 2017 revenue declined by about 80% and a number of Affiliates merged or dissolved.[14]

So glad I had the privilege of voting for Lucy McBath a few years ago! That helped - slightly - make up for the disaster of brine kemp's election to governor
