(22,878 posts)I have no idea what a Karen is.. except for a really great friend and my cousin, who both are liberal Democrats.. and their names are Karen.. and looking at this op and another on here the other day.. their names are being used as a pejorative

(4,131 posts)A Karen is someone who exploits their privilege to belittle someone else, often (but not always) in a racist way.
Try not to be offended by it. Obviously someone named Karen might not fit that description AT ALL. In fact, I know a couple of wonderful women named Karen. It is just a label that has grown to mean what it does.
Just like someone named Dick may not fit the Webster's definition of "a mean, stupid, or annoying man" and folks named Dick shouldn't take offense someone it is said that someone is being a Dick.

(4,131 posts)Don't take it too badly. As the world grows and changes around us, so must we grow and change with it. I sure never thought we'd be calling people Karens under these circumstances. But here we are - it is part of our lexicon now and it is here to stay.
Peacetrain
(22,878 posts)But a racist is a racist and should be called out for what they are, not some cute little moniker.. I am afraid if someone said to me that another person was a Karen.. (and they meant racist), you know what I would think.. that is their name... sometimes, especially in such important times as these.. it is good to stick to calling something it is so people understand exactly what it is.. that woman was a racist and should be called out for being that..

(9,581 posts)I think that when someone calls someone else a "dick" they are referring to the male genitalia, not the name. That makes it different than calling someone a "Karen," which is stupid af. JMHO.

(13,186 posts)I don't like the idea of "a Karen." Karen Carpenter was "a Karen," and, as far as I know, caused no harm to anyone.

(326 posts)How is using the term Karen racist? You may not agree with it, but I dont understand how this falls under the definition of racism?

NotAPuppet
(326 posts)But its still not racist to call people Karen. Thats what I was pointing out to you.
treestar
(82,383 posts)And there is no male equivalent. A dick happens to refer to the male organ and isn't trying to identify the man as white privileged, more like male privileged, if he's being a dick, but there is refers to the male organ, not the nickname for Richard.

In short, it's not racist to call a racist a racist.

(47,564 posts)If your first reaction is to take issue with the label we put on someone who is exploiting their privilege, usually but not always in a racist way, in order to belittle someone else, maybe you should do some soul searching.
My little sister is a strong Democrat. I remember lobbying my Mom and Dad to name her Karen, back in 1968. I sure didn't foresee that "Karen" would become the pseudonym of ignorant, uncaring, self-absorbed women. I feel bad everytime I hear someone use the name that way.

We don't have imagine enemies where they don't exist.
Castigating one's closest allies is not a winning strategy.

(13,186 posts)I don't consider the person who used the term Karen "an enemy" in any way. My apologies to them if they took it that way. I just wanted to throw a yellow flag.
I think the woman in the OP's video is a complete jerk. I just don't think using the term "Karen" is helpful. Would you rather no one said anything and people just kept doing it? It's off-putting and on the juvenile side of snarky. I occasionally stray into that territory myself, and I appreciate it when people point it out.

I'd rather we keep our eyes on the prize.
I'd rather we not find inconsequential items to distract us.
I'd rather we hold off on details until the real enemy is defeated.
I'll be totally transparent
Yes, I find it ridiculous to make an issue of the "Karen thing" at this point in history.
It's just a metaphor.
gulliver
(13,186 posts)From a practical standpoint of defeating the enemy, we're better off not alienating people who are named Karen (super common name) or the people who like and love someone with that name. It's jarring if you have a Karen in your life to see the name blithely ridiculed. If that factor shaves a fraction of a percent off our voting tally, that could end up being a big deal.

After racial violence in the U.S., writer Karen Attiah re-examines the 'Karen' meme
The Karen memes and jokes arent sexist or racist. Let a Karen explain.
And to invent oppression when none is happening to you? Well, as a Karen, I just have to say that is peak Karen behavior.

(26,355 posts)When you get in people's faces and act like a racist piece of shit, and act all entitled like that, THAT's when you get called a Karen. It's not just because she's a woman or has a bob cut, it's because she's being a massive jerk and trying to throw her weight around.
It's based on behavior, not membership in an ethnic/gender/racial group, therefore Karen is not a slur.
This harridan was trying to bark orders at total strangers. I would have flipped out and got in her face if she tried that with me.
She should consider herself lucky that Latina woman only gave her a love tap. A lot of people would respond to such shitty behavior with a right hook.

So I'm lead to believe that it's not in fact, wrong and arguably racist, but rather a ginned-up excuse to engage in some hipster sanctimony.

(65,138 posts)...for the posting with hearing disabilities, the young woman was CLEARLY a native born american. If we just heard the audio, you wouldn't know if she was of Mexican origin or was a blue eyed, blond haired girl name Jablonski.
She sounded like a typical early 20s woman from pretty much anywhere in the US.
So, this idiot that got smacked was looking for a fight.
She started one, and got one!
