SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (KUTV) In a one-man demonstration, a Utah Marine stood outside the Utah State Capitol for more than three hours on Friday to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement, according to photographer Robin Pendergrast.
Pendergrast, who captured the event, said this Utah Marine was decorated with two Marine Purple Hearts. Only identified as Todd, the Marine was captured with a thick piece of black tape covering his mouth that read "I can't breathe."
Some of the photos show the Marine's shoes melting in the blistering heat; yesterday's weather in Salt Lake City was in the 90s. The sign he held in front of the Capitol explains the Marine's motives: "Justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, and countless others..."

(12,544 posts)is he'll get called into the office and dressed down for wearing his uniform while protesting, maybe some confinement to base for a few days.

(33,643 posts)Assuming he's not active duty anymore, that would be some means of denying him his pension/benefits, that sort of thing.
I would like to say 'no way that happens' ... but sadly ...

Yes, there was at least one protest in Utah...https://www.deseret.com/utah/2020/6/2/21277840/protest-utah-george-floyd-salt-lake-city-police-brutality-riot-black-lives-matter-blm
...and as a Marine Corps brat who considers Parris Island to be her hometown ('59-'64, a very long stint on one base!)), it's hard to say just how deeply Todd Winn has moved me...
Thanks again!

(113,995 posts)I have trouble imagining that even the most dedicated cosplay type would bake in the 90 degree heat for three hours.

(1,640 posts)Reading about his shoes, I thought, That is taking your military discipline and using it to truly serve your countrymen.
The anti-quarantine protesters were protesting the loss of minor pleasures and privileges. I can't imagine any one of them suffering to protest their "suffering".
Unfortunately, I can imagine police meeting demonstrations against police brutality with more police brutality. 'Cause brutality is the point. (It sure ain't the cause of justice and social harmony.)

(3,062 posts)Given the current tenor of things and the fact the Corps, belatedly, banned any display of the Confederate flag and the fact that his message is not against the government per se, rather for the Constitutional construct of justice, I doubt he will see any official ramifications at all. And I would bet even if he is given some administrative punishment, he will wear that with the same pride he wears those medals and that uniform.

(1,693 posts)That bone spurs draft dodger isnt worthy of shining this Marines shoes. As a former Air Force enlisted guy, if I were to run into him, he wouldnt be allowed to buy a beer. HE is the kind of person we all look up to, not that despicable piece of garbage we all hope gets his walking papers in November along with those spineless republican congress people.

(33,643 posts)Honestly, that might've been the most egregious example of them all.
A diminutive 11 year old kid, playing in a large, empty park w/an airsoft gun he'd found (not shooting it just waving it around a little), murdered in cold blood by a pig who should never have even been hired due to being fired from other cities. Just because someone called 911 and said 'there's a black person with a gun in the park'.
If you've ever seen the video, it's absolutely disgusting.

(296 posts)The military brass in the Pentagon are so upset with Trump. His divisive rhetoric is forcing the troops into a dangerous dilemma. Whether to follow orders or to follow their conscience. This should be sending a message!
