Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson called for the end of systemic racism against black people and other persons of color in a lengthy, heartfelt letter posted to social media Monday morning in the wake of the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man in Minneapolis.
Wilson stated how he recalled his late father and grandfather telling him about the brutal acts of violence inflicted upon blacks during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 60s, and how it feels to him that the reality is the past has never left us.
It seems that we have been thrust back to those horrific events all over again in 2020, Wilson wrote. The reality is the past has never let us. As Ive been thinking about what to say, I realized there are no words that can alleviate the hurt and pain over the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and so many others.
Protests sparked over the weekend after a fired Minneapolis police officer, whos white, allegedly killed Floyd, 46, last Monday. The officer, Derek Chauvin, was shown in a video pinning his knee on Floyds neck for nearly nine minutes, even as Floyd said he couldnt breathe.
