I have antenna tv
This weekend there has been very little news of what is happening in this country. It makes me angry there are no news stations on antenna tv.
We however have a Japanese news station/channel.NHK
I am sick of being outside the loop. If I didn't come to DU it would in effect be like every other weekend shit like infomercials, old movies, kids programming, crap.
Another way capitalism fucks over poor people.
There is no real news available to people who can't afford cable.
Just shit.
I hate weekends.
The few news shows I see during the week are filled with tons of commercials, very little news content. Because the commercials take up all the time.
There is an hour show during the weekdays on the pandemic.
There should be news available to all,and a limit on commercials so stories can be told and not just soundbites..

CNN https://www.livenewsnow.com/american/cnn-news-usa.html
PBS etc. https://ustvgo.tv/pbs-live/
Lets keep this link kicked up as a lot of people cannot afford cable tv anymore.
Streaming online is the only way to get new for a lot of "us".
Thank you!!!

I can't download the apps some places demand you put on your phone to see the content.
Pay tv needs to go away.
Taxpayers subsidied those cables they profit from.

(20,882 posts)I have a used desktop that I bought on ebay with Windows 7 on it.
I have an old analogue TV too and use rabbit ears and a signal converter box on it.
Between the TV and the links online on the desktop, I am getting a lot.
I pay $35 for a DSL connection.
I gave-up on the cable.
It has turned into a huge scam. Some are paying $600 a month for it with cable TV.
I can only afford so much but I manage some how.
Take care UndergroundPanther!

I do get local news, but I'm in Minnesota and I'm getting non-stop coverage about the Minneapolis protests.
For news from elsewhere, I'm just monitoring DU.
If you'd like some links to the MN news streaming sites, let me know.

(19,569 posts)The networks are still the most watched news sources by the vast majority of Americans. Their coverage was great. Also, many, many people have at least one news app on their phones now and get alerts. Maybe that would work for you, too?

(38,349 posts)That's the way I like it.
Television news and opinion just makes me angry.
I think people get addicted to that that non-productive anger.
I've got zero patience for television commercials.
It's my good fortune to have enough money for an unlimited DSL internet connection that's just fast enough to run "Standard" definition Netflix without any glitches.
My little flip phone works as an internet access point if I tether it to my Chromebook but the pay-as-you go data is expensive, it was $10 a gigabyte last I looked.
All I know of CNN or MSNBC is what I see here on DU.
This nation could easily support internet and relatively unbiased television news for all.

(25,789 posts)Travel, food and cooking, history, arts. I'll be watching a cooking quiz show with questions such as, Which one of these vegetables floats in water? and think, never in a million years could this be on American tv.
One of my favorites is the tv series "Solitary Gourmet": practically a show about nothing. The character is has an import-export business. He takes a business trip, has a meeting, then the important part begins. He is hungry. He must choose a restaurant. Once he has chosen, he must ponder what to order. Once he has ordered, how to concoct the best bite? We hear a voiceover of him thinking about all of this. Then we watch him eat. Often he see something delicious another customer has ordered and orders some for himself. We watch him finish his meal and leave. Never in a million years could this be on American tv.
There are shows where the camera crew walks through the streets of a town or city, interviews people, sometimes we are invited to see their shops and their homes. A reporter is sent to a village somewhere to stay with a family and we see everything about their lives, and especially what they cook and eat. I'll never go to Stockholm or Northern Italy, but in a way I have!
Soothing not to have everything about conflict and competition. America makes everything about that. No wonder people don't have much sense of society. That and the way Republicans have politicized everything to divide the country.

(12,507 posts)Keep everything focussed on competition,on buy this, ect. The rich are also at fault regarding this because of greed and profit seeking.
The whole idea of profits over people needs to be destroyed and rooted out of our country. The rich must be made to bleed money. Because they've taken everything in rapacious greed and abuse of power and abuse of people. Fuck profit it's killing this country.
