They have worked to turn further societal acceptance of an intolerable reality (racism) into a counter intolerable reality (growing civil unrest). But when a breaking point is finally reached it is never assured that subsequent change will actually be for the better. Rioting can not be regulated like the flow of water from a spigot. Fine controls are lacking. In the short term, at some point, continued riots will serve the purpose of Donald Trump. We live in dangerous times.

(22,912 posts)Whites who want to start a race war because they think they can "win it". They wouldn't, just like the South could not win the last Civil War. Too many Americans of all races are disgusted by overt in your face racism even if many of them still harbor prejudice. But even less than overt racism kills Black Americans daily. It can't go on this way.
Good lord there will be suffering all the way around if those who want to provoke a race war ever get even close to achieving their goal.

(58,649 posts)largely based on a "law and order" platform claiming he could stop the rioting.
Sure, he promised to end Vietnam, and didn't, but mainly he ran on that restoring law and order over the riots promise.

(153 posts)The riots aren't political. These countrymen of ours, who have lost so many and suffered so much, don't view this through a Dem vs. Rep lens. This is a fight that cant be won in the arena of politics.

(22,912 posts)I never said the riots were political and I know that they are not. Politics is usually reactive and only rarely is it sometimes formulative. We do what we do in life minimally to survive and hopefully to prosper, not because of our partisan loyalties. No people can indefinitely accept an intolerable reality. But what happens in our communities does have political consequences, up to and including actual Revolutions (and Counter Revolutions) if matters get extreme enough.

(1,737 posts)People on here are showing their true colors. This is an eye-opening moment. Thank goodness Joe Biden he been the adult in the room and has shown true leadership. If he reacted like many on DU, black voters would not turn out in November. Our issues matter. Our lives matter. And those who only see this as a story to be viewed through a political lens only, lack empathy and are contributing to a possible Trump victory, by alienating black voters.
I do believe people are upset (rightfully so) and tempers are at fever pitch but I also believe something nefarious is afoot. These protests have been infiltrated.
