According to a report from Politico, Donald Trumps administration is recalling National Guard members assisting in states with coronavirus pandemic efforts just before many become eligible for extra benefits from the federal government.
The report states the guardsmen face a hard stop just one day shy of many members becoming eligible for key federal benefits, according to a senior FEMA official.

In a May 12 call obtained by Politico, The official also acknowledged during the call that the June 24 deadline means that thousands of members who first deployed in late March will find themselves with only 89 days of duty credit, one short of the 90-day threshold for qualifying for early retirement and education benefits under the Post-9/11 GI bill.

The official also acknowledged that the order will require a delicate messaging strategy, in order to quell complaints.......................

The guard/reserve usually doesn't activate for longer than their two week duty, which is anywhere from 15 to 17 days. However there are times they are called up for extended periods.
It is well known that the magic number is 90 days. Once that number of days of consecutive service is reached, several long term benefits will kick in, as if the guard/reservist had served on active duty. Therefore the extended activation will last 89 days at most (unless it is a deployment to a combat theater). Great lengths will be gone to, making sure the guard/reservist is released before that 90th day.
There is a similar situation in the navy. After a certain number of days at sea, an additional pay benefit kicks in for the sailors. Unsurprisingly ships will make a port call 1 or 2 days prior to avoid having to give the additional pay.

(82,849 posts)My stepdaughter got laid off at Wal Mart on her 89th day three or four times before she moved somewhere else she could get employment. Her bosses were always very sorry, praised her performance, and urged her to re-apply the next week. The day 89 layoff meant that she hadn't achieved "permanent" status, and she couldn't get unemployment.
Looks like Trump is using the same playbook, as if paying the National Guard folks is coming out of his pocket.

(146,317 posts)Holding National Guard members to postings one day short of the 90-day threshold is SOP. That way, they don't have to pay the extras NG members qualify for for continuous service of 90 days or more.
It is a cold-hearted and evil procedure.
