this is a pretty good deal. Biden didn't have to do this at all, so it's kind of impressive that he was able to get even this deal.

(12,265 posts)It just will not be tolerated this time. We have to beat Trump with people who show up and vote. We are not going to please all of them it is not possible and it is not going to help us win. Winning is EVERYTHING this time. We do not have time for a revolution.

(22,912 posts)There was a widely held view in the media and elsewhere that the DNC started out the 2016 presidential race season with a bias toward uniting early behind Hillary Clinton. It showed up in relatively small stuff like the original debate schedule. It turned up in some leaked emails etc. I'm not claiming there was some giant plot or that the whole shebang was rigged against Sanders, just that there was at least some built in initial DNC favoritism toward a highly regarded and respected leading figure in the Democratic Party, who many Democratic insiders just assumed was a lock to become the nominee. I think that was to a large part understandable at the time, but if fed into distrust from many of those on the "outside" of "inside politics" that something wasn't fair about the process.
Why do I mention this now? Because Joe Biden is preempting all of that suspicion and left over ill feelings among many of those who did not initially rally to his side this time around, by strongly signalling that he is embracing all Democrats under his leadership. Biden has the advantage of hindsight and he has applied a timely lesson from recent history by leaning over backward to be inclusive. That is a very meaningful gesture on his part and he will be handsomely rewarded by an enhanced show of unity at the convention as a result. It doesn't matter a bit if he is being more accommodating than he "needs to be". Ultimately it will be Joe Biden who will win as a result.
Joe Biden is no rookie at this. He understands the psychology of political coalition building. He is a real pro ,and he is a good man, and he is handling this perfectly. My hat is off to him

(41,960 posts)the Biden campaign is busily preparing to roll out a strategy and plan that will be as inclusive and sane as is humanly possible. He clearly intends to represent himself as open to fair discourse with all kinds of citizens. Hes doing exactly the opposite of what extremists of all stripes dovilify and ridicule and divide. What he understands is that you can run a country according to a plan and promote specific policies, and even make laws and rules and dont entertain certain ideas at all, without raging and posturing.
When you offer to sit down with people and take them seriously and they still rage and condemn, you know its not about solving problems. Its just about the rage. Hes smarter than that.

Sanders didn't draw this out and try to make a fuss at the convention and Biden is going to let him keep more delegates than he had to. He's probably going to let him get some policy wins as well.
