My wife went to the grocery to buy Easter things. Turns out shes not alone.
My cheap ass belt broke yesterday, so I need a new one. The clothing stores are closed, and I need one now. Meijer is the only place open, and its full of grocery shoppers.

(9,998 posts)Plenty of Drumpf Cult Members going out rather than staying at home.
Lots of people still not taking any of this seriously. It's up to us responsible people to keep things from totally falling apart.

(922 posts)Drive 55 miles each way. Yesterday on I-5 the traffic volume seemed like any other day pre covid 19. People are starting to ignore guidelines to stay home.
It's a pity since it seemed that we were doing pretty good in western Washington metropolitan area.

(11,738 posts)I want to get back to the office and to get back to whatever normal was or will be. I want to go out to the store and shop, and go to the park with my kids, and get back to the home improvement projects that have gone out the window recently.
I want to do all of those things...badly. The thing is, I have some understanding of public health and can understand why the experts who actually study pandemics, are against doing so.
Emotions are powerful though, and they often will shut down logic and reason. People are frustrated, angry, and scared. They want what they want and Trump manipulates that with his idiotic ideas of "Opening the country back up for business". He wants it because he knows the longer this goes on, the more people will realize that he is a monumental fuck up, so he plays to their fears and desires to return to "normal".
The problem with reason, logic, and good public policy is that they are typically difficult, but yield good results in time and with effort. Their effectiveness can slow down the spread and can mitigate damage but they are not showy, flashy, or short cuts. It takes sustained effort. People like Trump come in and short circuit the situation because they appeal to American's desire for a short cut. The diet pill that lets you eat cake and lose weight. The workout machine that you can use 10 minutes a day and get 3% body fat, ripped abs, and stamina.
If this trend continues, there will be a major resurgence and people will wonder why and then look to blame whatever except themselves for not listening to the experts. It is as you say, A Pity.

(21,152 posts)I brought my sister a new cordless phone. Passed the clothing department and no one was looking at clothes. I did see belts in the mens department on my way to electronics area.

(4,554 posts)Folks are supposed to be doing only necessary shopping i.e. groceries and pharma stuff (and as infrequently as possible). I don't think belts and cordless phones fall into those categories.
Social distancing is an absolute must if we are to survive this onslaught.
And Dr Drump threatening to "reopen" things on May 1st is insanity on wheels.
