Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsCan you predict Trump's future political strategy?
Everything he does is directed toward the election in November. Nothing else is important. This epidemic is simply a nuisance. He cannot stop playing politics and dividing our country into "his side" and "their side". That is all he knows.
He is planning how he is going to spin this epidemic for him. Even if 200,000 people die because of his negligence and foot-dragging, he will call it a great victory. After all, his great doctors and advisers told him there might be over two million people die from the virus. With his leadership, he was able to save about two million lives. He will be so proud of himself.
He will repeat it about ten-thousand times between now and election day in November. His supporters will hear it in their sleep.
No matter where the economy is or what the unemployment rate is in November, he will say that he had the greatest economy in the world before the virus, which he has now defeated in a great victory, hit our country. He will still blame it on the Chinese.
Can you see other parts of his strategy for the election in November? Other than, he will say how lucky we were that Joe Biden was not the President when this happened?

(18,705 posts)It's just that the hospitals and governors wouldn't listen to me.
They were all trying to make me look bad so they didn't prepare in time.
This is all their fault. If they would have done what I said right away this would never have gotten so bad.
You can blame them!

(3,888 posts)As the virus impacts more and more of the Country:
1. Trump declares that he needs more emergency powers to handle the problem.
2. DOJ receives the right to suspend our Constitutional rights - combined with involuntary internments, curtailment of political dissent,
curtailment on the rights of the 4th Estate, internment of those that might incite political dissent.
3. Delay of election in 2020 until after the emergency is called off.
4. I sadly have come to the conclusion that Trump does not care how many people in the blue states die.
5. Define an enemy for the people to scapegoat.
All hell, let's just make it easy - read the "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich".

(26,911 posts)He doesn't have the strategic skills to game out a coherent plan for tomorrow, no less in 7 months.
That may be our saving grace. The truth as to what Trump has done -before and during - this crisis is a public record that can't be changed or defended.

(10,085 posts)His "messages"
1. I saved us from the Chinese virus killing far more Americans.
Keep asserting the China travel ban kept Chinese virus out and saved us from a far worse fate.
Problem for us here is that the truth -- incompetence and obstruction allowed the virus to circulate, undetected for the first 7, most critical, weeks is harder to convey than the simple lie. Because there was no testing, we don't have numbers to "prove" this (catch 22). His supporters, of course, buy the lie 100%. Unfortunately, others will too. It is a lie that sounds reasonable if you don't know the details.
2. See, it wasn't so bad.
When strong social distancing and other precautions keep the number of deaths below 100,000, he'll say he was always right -- all the fear-mongering was just hysterical opponents trying to ruin him.
2. As a corollary to "see it wasn't so bad," the long lock downs were unnecessary.
He'll assert that it was unnecessary to keep lock downs in place for so long (i.e., evil Dem governors in CA and NY ruined the economy for no reason because it was never going to be as bad as they were saying).
3.Blame New York City
When the numbers in NY metro region are far worse than than elsewhere as a result of it being the most densely populated region, blame NYC for spread to other states. There is something wrong with NY (all his supporters know that because "those people" hate Trump and hate America.
4. He saved corporate American and wall street -- the entire economy to him (screw rest of us) -- with the big bailout Going forward only his genius as as businessman can fix things.
Of course, the massive deficit spending will be crippling going forward and should have been offset by calling for sacrifice on the part of the most fortunate among us. (i.e., A call for investment in the nation in the form of a wealth tax on the top 10% that own, and will continue to own, 70% of our nations assets. Such an investment would be the best they ever made because it would help rebuild an economy they will continue to benefit from.)
That's about it -- along with all his usual lies, obscene grandiosity, and mentally unstable behavior that the cowardly Republicans will continue to discount an ddefend as best they can.

(11,478 posts)When even Fox is showing him losing at some point it might start sinking hes going to lose in the biggest landslide in history. So he might make some excuse and bail out. Or he might catch the bug and hes got a lot of pre-existing conditions, or maybe a stroke or heart attack; hes been packing in the pounds lately. What happened to his annual physical, you know, the one he started to take a couple months ago during a weekend?

(25,183 posts)on this thing being over sometime in the second quarter of the year, then he will have his business buddies (like the kind he lauded today) pull out all the stops to make the economy roar back in the third quarter. Those results will be available before November, and he will run on the idea that he is best positioned to get the nation back to where it was before this "foreign" virus screwed everything up. He'll make comparisons to the Obama-Biden recovery after the 2009 stimulus bill, and will attack Joe that way.
If the economy is still in recession in the third quarter, then he hasn't got too much of a chance.

(9,339 posts)And, he wants to remain under the legal protection of the presidency. Hence, cancelling the election seems to be the path to his best outcome. So that's what I'm expecting now.
Its the best path for the Republican party too.
