As Religious Wishful Thinking clashes with Scientific Reasoning and Math.
My first thought is "God Help Us!"
Isn't that ironic.
Trust me, it is just a figure of speech for me. I don't believe in such an entity and I am not sure I would expect such help if I did.

(18,402 posts)not so much, "God help us to cure the virus," because, you know, she can't do that, and we know that, whether believers or not.
Rather, in times of stress or loss, etc. we use the figure of "God" as a means of ... well, connecting with ourselves to remind ourselves to gather the strength to cope and regain some sort of balance, if not hope.
I am an agnostic, but in times of great difficulty (a loved one's illness or death, or some other vital problem), I've found myself calling upon that imaginary deity myself. And I figure, it couldn't hurt!
That, to me, is the function of religion.

It is frustrating for an atheist that most of the great exclamations have religious connotations:
God Help Us!
Jesus Wept!
Damn it!
Etc.
It makes it hard to be expressive without implying religion.
