Its Just Everywhere Already: How Delays in Testing Set Back the U.S. Coronavirus Response
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/10/us/coronavirus-testing-delays.html
Later that day, the investigators and Seattle health officials gathered with representatives of the C.D.C. and the F.D.A. to discuss what happened. The message from the federal government was blunt. What they said on that phone call very clearly was cease and desist to Helen Chu, Dr. Lindquist remembered. Stop testing.
A silent spread
Still, the troubling finding reshaped how officials understood the outbreak. Seattle Flu Study scientists quickly sequenced the genome of the virus, finding a genetic variation also present in the countrys first coronavirus case.
The implications were unnerving. There was a good chance that the virus had been circulating silently in the community for around six weeks, infecting potentially hundreds of people.
I remember that article but dont remember this part of it being discussed in the media

(18,770 posts)In late January, the first confirmed American case of the coronavirus had landed in her area. Critical questions needed answers: Had the man infected anyone else? Was the deadly virus already lurking in other communities and spreading?
As luck would have it, Dr. Chu had a way to monitor the region. For months, as part of a research project into the flu, she and a team of researchers had been collecting nasal swabs from residents experiencing symptoms throughout the Puget Sound region.
To repurpose the tests for monitoring the coronavirus, they would need the support of state and federal officials. But nearly everywhere Dr. Chu turned, officials repeatedly rejected the idea, interviews and emails show, even as weeks crawled by and outbreaks emerged in countries outside of China, where the infection began.
By Feb. 25, Dr. Chu and her colleagues could not bear to wait any longer. They began performing coronavirus tests, without government approval.
What came back confirmed their worst fear. They quickly had a positive test from a local teenager with no recent travel history. The coronavirus had already established itself on American soil without anybody realizing it.
It must have been here this entire time, Dr. Chu recalled thinking with dread. Its just everywhere already.

I went out that day and got 2-3 weeks of supplies and have been self-isolating ever since. My goal is to NOT get sick during round 1 (the "tsunami" Cuomo predicts will hit hospitals in NYS) where I'd have the least likely favorable outcome (they might have to let me die in favor of saving someone else).

I don't know, I posted an OP that the lack of unfettered nationwide scaled up testing is on purpose and Red Don doesn't care about anyone else but themselves.

(46,703 posts)The health department is not including the cases from the snowbirds, so each county is under-reported. In Seminole County they claimed that their are 4 to 6 cases, but someone on the Florida Forum said that there are 18 more cases they are not attributing to the county because the people live out of state. Well...are they mingling with Floridians?
On Saturday, when the cases reported in Seminole County was down to one man who had traveled on the Nile, I thought it was safe to attend a social event. Had I known that there were 18 cases in my county I wouldn't have gone to the event. It's just common sense that those people were contagious before they developed symptoms. So why didn't they tell us once they knew?

That's not to say that such a virus might one day happen but it is unlikely to happen any time soon unless its a man made one.

The Kushner family is trying to cash in on the pandemic that could kill millions of us.
Oscar Health, the health insurance company co-founded by Jared Kushners younger brother, announced Friday it has launched a testing center locator for COVID-19. It shows where more than 100 centers are in the United States. The company is also offering a risk assessment survey and means to talk to a doctor online.
The coronavirus is predicted to kill anywhere from almost 500,000 Americans in the next year to more than 5 million. At least 62 people in the United States had died by Sunday; 3,130 have tested positive.
Team Trump announced Saturday that Trump tested negative for the virus despite presiding over a coronavirus hot zone at Mar-a-Lago. Testing efforts have been marked by delays and dysfunction. Just a few thousand people were tested during the weeks the virus spread across our country.

Did we have it first? Because I hate to be paranoid but, the way this has been handled it criminal and intentional. And if that ugly disgusting fuck does not get it, it is a gross anomaly given the spread of this virus. I would begin to believe he had a vaccine. All of the samples need testing, and a timeline. I don't understand why they didn't go against the CDC earlier and get public about the CDC trying to suppress info about a possible virulent virus. We still need more info.
