First of all, I have cancelled all meetings and get togethers and have been in self quarantine on my farm for the past month. I have a farm which means that I am doing lots of physical work, other people do come and go to help out with various projects, but I have kept a big distance at all times. And I sell mail order, so no public contact is required. Just the post office. But people in the post office are sneezing and coughing and so I have limited going to twice a week.
1. Lately I began to wear my farmworking coveralls complete with the dust mask that I have to wear for my farm work and my gloves to these public places. I used to remove all these things and wear my town clothes but not anymore.
2. Before I come into the house, which I keep wiped down, I remove all these outer clothes and boots and gloves and masks and leave them outside on my mud porch. I wash the dust mask (it is made of fabric) out and let it dry overnight. You can sew your own cloth dust masks, they are pretty simple.
3. Before I started doing this someone sneezed and coughed right near me in the post office, and I was wearing my nice town clothes. So, once I got home I threw everything into the wash and washed it all right away.
4. If people were coughing or sneezing or anything like that in public I then shower and wash my hair. Sometimes I just do that anyway.
5. I wipe down all the door handles and gate handles. I never wear shoes inside the house. I keep the house as clean as possible.
6. Of course I am doing all the hand washing. And to avoid touching my face I keep my hair in a ponytail despite it being particularly unflattering. But who is seeing me anyway?
7. My grandmother kept her entire family alive during the 1918 Spanish Flu by having each of them swallow a clove of garlic every day. Im doing an easier version of that that I hope works as effectively, Im using garlic power in my cooking.
8. Im up to date with my vaccines. I am drinking teas with turmeric, and taking elderberry syrups. I am fortunate to have good food and no issue with alcohol, so I am hoping that I can avoid getting this even if I get exposed.
People give me bad looks when I am walking around with my mask and coveralls on. But so what? They should be grateful that I am not sneezing or coughing on them. And that I am doing my best to avoid occupying a hospital bed should they or one of their loved ones require it.
They sell used cloth coveralls in most hardware stores. Mine are specifically for women and I buy them mail order from a small business in CA called: Rosies Workwear. I recommend considering some sort of over all clothing that you take off and leave outside of the area of your house or apartment that you spend the most time in. Even if you do not get coveralls. I have a tiny house without anywhere enough inside space, hence leaving it all out on the mud porch.
Ok, I just wanted to share the things that I am doing and thinking about with anyone who is looking for ideas for what to do if you must go out in public. When you really dont want to, and when it seems as though everyone around you is not seeming to take this very seriously.

(6,291 posts)As I buy it by the pound to give to my sheep to help them be healthy, so I have all these garlic granules around......
I think you are right about boosting the system in a general way.

(86,647 posts)when I drove semis. Kept coveralls and boots, gloves in the sidebox. Or when I went home at night, I'd strip down in the entryway, had a special bin for that laundry.

So hoping that we can all get through this.

(86,647 posts)a small apartment-like cabin and I still do that. Don't wear shoes in the house, not even bluejeans when indoors. It's sweats and T-shirts indoors. Right now it's still cold and snowy so I have lots of ski bibs and I just slip into those over my sweats, a pair of winter mucks and I have the whole bottom half ready to go.

Plus my problem is that my lungs react to dust, and so I try to have a dust free zone.

(8,445 posts)I'm an unwilling landlord, and I can't even begin to describe to you some of what I've had to clean up in rentals. I'd go in through the garage, strip down, throw Everything in the washer, which is right off of the garage, and jump in the shower.
My ex-husband, whom I divorced a little over a year ago, would come home and plop his dirty self down on the couch. I sure don't miss that. Looking back, I think he was just being gross on purpose to piss me off.
Edited to add: I was thrilled to buy new furniture after he left, and he'll never set foot in my house again.

(320 posts)At least some of what you are doing is good. HOWEVER, you are dealing with a virus, not a vampire, so unless you get off on eating garlic, don't bother.

(13 posts)A number of years ago a man told me about his grandparents. The 1918 flu hit their Gulf Coast Alabama town hard. His grandparents ended up nursing many of their neighbors, and burying a few. They would do what you have described....no shoes in the house, undress on the porch and wash down before coming inside. They and their kids never got sick. Smart.

(6,291 posts)Perhaps we should start a whole thread where people share stories that they have heard from descendants of survivors of the 1918 Spanish Flu.

(1,752 posts)apply hand sanitizer, that does not address the rest of my body, hair, my coat and clothing. I somehow got in the habit of pushing a shopping cart with my body/forearms, so yesterday it finally occurred to me in the middle of a busy grocery store that that means the germs are all over me and my clothing instead of my hands.
I cant do a farmer coverall thing but maybe just have a set of clothes/outwear I leave on front porch instead of bringing up into apartment. A pita, but I figure if Im going to make any effort at all I might as well give it my best shot. I figure if the virus remains alive for up to 72 hrs then I can rotate among 3 coats I have - ie let them sit for 3 days before wearing it again. Cant wash a coat after each wearing.
I have an actual respirator, plastic gloves and eye goggles (from doing masonry repair and painting on my house). Ill break those out when things get really scary.

(13,596 posts)almost everything else. The only other thing is going it to donate blood platelets. The blood center should be as safe as any public operation. All donors know they can't donate with any cold of flu symptoms. I suppose that's be worst chance of being around someone that is asymptomatic, but I'm in good health at 59. I'm retired from that blood center and they need platelets bad, so I'm risking that.

(17,669 posts)Safety glasses make heaps of sense too! Especially pink ones ❤️
Id like to add that with hand sanitizer basically unavailable for love or money, two squirt bottles carried around in the car, one with soapy water and one with clean water, is just as good.
So, wash your hands with soap and water from the squirt bottle and then rinse it off from the other squirt bottle then that way when we run out of hand sanitizer we dont become walking vectors.

(6,291 posts)And what a good idea about the soapy water! Good thinking! Thank you!

Smart, yes, but not my idea. He said he couldnt find hand sanitizer and as long as he uses good washing technique this is better anyway, and cheaper. And also possible
